Not having had a microchipped before, do vets scan to locate the 'chip, before boostering in case they happen to hit the 'chip?   My lad is due his boosters soon.

No need; the vaccination is given under the skin and the chip is in the muscle.

Really I thought it was implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades into the fatty tissue, it would be incredibly painful to implant it directly into a muscle, I have to have intramuscular injections & they are bl**dy painful

My wording was a little vague - I admit to being guilty of dumbing down a bit! To be 100% accurate I should have said that the chip is inserted into the deep subcutaneous tissue, and not just under the skin like a vaccination. All the evidence of migrating chips points to incorrect (too shallow) insertion of the chip by whoever inserted it.

That is however NOT the way that implanters are trained to do it.

I think I'm most concerned about the fact that sometimes the microchip does move.   And given vets usually grab a handful of the loose skin of my Bassets, and definitely around the area I understand my Basset was 'chipped (he was done at the same time he was in for a dental, so I didn't see where it went in other than 'between the shoulder blades') I'm interested about this one.   I may ask for him to be scanned first!!!

I always get my vet to check microchips whenever my dogs are there for whatever reason. It's reassuring to know it is still working and also pinpoints it's location.

I honestly don't think microchips and vaccinations are any problems at all. I have close to 60 animals all chipped and all but a few old cats are vaccinated every year.

I have 21 dogs, all are boostered annually, and all are microchipped.  I have never even considered the booster being done in the wrong place.  Never had a problem, not ever.

sad really! I think a lot of new scanners and hip emplanters get nervous and rush through it!! ive seen a lady implant a tiny puppy and the needle come out the other side poor puppy!!! I think vaccines are fine with chips ive never had a problem with mine either...but then I chip all my own dogs so who knows

Just to update, my microchipped Basset had his boosters yesterday and I mentioned the microchip.   I'm sure the (new) vet thought stupid woman but credit to him, smiled politely and suggested he'd be 'lucky' to hit the chip!!!   He didn't offer to scan and I didn't ask.   He didn't manage to hit the microchip.
