Nope not for me! I'm firmly a Westie and Elkhound girl (Yup Brainless! Still smitten :) ) but asking a question for an Aunt of mine. Anyway, my aunt lost her English Bull Terrier dog Chance last year and is now looking for a new breed. She's at home all day and is looking for a smallish breed to join her family, she does have two grandchildren aged 4 and 7 who occasionally visit. She's looking for a breed which she can take out for walks and take out on day trips. She is quite smitten with both the Pug and the French Bulldog (has attended crufts 9 years in a row!) and would like to know the difference in temperament between the two?

Never owned a Frenchi, but have owned and bred pugs for quite a few years.  They are a wonderful, loving, sociable breed with much humour.  they do demand attention and love to be doing what you are doing.  Can be wilful and naughty.  You can train them to do just as much as they want to learn, but this varies greatly from pug to pug.   Highly collectible - few have only 1!  Get on well wiht other dogs and adore playing with own breed especially - we often have Pug Parties with up to 50 of them playing freely with each other, and never a cross word between them!

I know quite a few Frenchis and this they are lovely dogs, but they can be a bit more temperamental than pugs, a little more prone to "having a go" at other dogs.

I have come across pugs X with other breeds 3 or 4 times - I can only say that those individuals have always been playful with my dog, I have never noted Frenchies being a problem with other dogs - thats all I can really comment on.

There loving follow you everywhere want to be with you and on your lap all the time there greedy mines not happy until she's licked the kitchen floor clean they think there big dogs my boy would stick up for himself against any size dog mine don't like the cold or rain they can walk a lot further then people think mine all go on long walks twice a day and as Gwen said you can't just have one lol that's pugs don't know about frenchies sorry.

Thank you so much for your reply. She's decided she wants a Pug and is just wondering if there is a difference in temperament between the sexes? This is her first little dog after a life time of larger rescue dogs and understandably wants to get things 'right' so to speak.

Generally both sexes are equally loving, but there can be a difference in temperament between the colours.  The blacks are generally livlier and more non-stop.
