My dog has dew claws on his back leg. They are kept trimmed by the dog groomer but are very "curled" and I wonder if there might be a time when they will cause problems.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Wendy it very much depends on the breed of dog you have and the type of ground he is exercised, I have a nearly two year old bitch with rear dew claws and like you at first I was worried she was going to catch them. So far they have not been a problem, but I keep them trimmed as short as possible, and I make sure she does not have any open weave blankets or anything that she might catch them in.
She is exercised over all sorts of terrain, long grass woods etc. and now she has feathering on her back legs they are hardly noticeable.
Some breeds it is part of the breed standard that the dew claws are left on, in others they are normally removed.
If they do become a problem, then your vet can remove them under general aesthetic, but I would see how you go with them as no point having an operation if the dog manages perfectly well with them.
Dew claws don't wear down like the other nails and grow at speed. The nail will curl if not trimmed regularly so you probably just need to cut them more often.

I suppose the ultimate answer with these is to have them removed, but as this would now need a general anaesthetic, perhaps it's best to just make sure you do keep them clipped so they don't curl round into the leg. Perhaps if your dog needs a g/a at some point, for something else, you might discuss whether to get them take off at the same time? For sure a ripped dew claw is a darned nuisance.

One of mine had very loose, floppy dew claws on his hind legs. They were also double clawed and difficult to cut. He caught them many times and yelped as it hurt. My vet advised removing them which I had done when he was castrated to save multiple GAs. He is fine now, runs around like a lunatic and is much better without them than he was with.
