Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Progesterone query - levels rising very fast
- By Noora Date 07.01.14 12:44 UTC
I had my girl tested as follows:
tuesday morning (day 9 of season) 3.2 nmol/l
Friday 2 o'clock (day 12 of season) 11.4 nmol/l
Monday 1 o'clock (day 15 of season) 70 nmol/l

I have always been told it takes eggs 48h to mature, looking at her levels on friday she should have ovulated late friday/saturday? But looking at progesterone levels the eggs were getting old by Monday?
Does anybody know if the progesterone level shooting up will make the eggs mature quicker than the norm or would she have ovulated on lower levels than normal bitch to explain the numbers on Monday?
Little confused how it all works :-)
Should we take Friday as her ovulation day (for due day counting purposes)?

See table below;-

0-2  nmol/L           Baseline concentrations too early to estimate ovulation
3 - 6 nmol /L        Minimum 2 days before ovulation expected however result of 3 - 4 nmol/L may persist for a week or longer before increasing. Earliiest estimating breeding 4 - 6 days but could be longer (re test needed)
7 - 12 nmol/L   Minimum 1 day before ovulation. Estimated window for breeding 3 - 5 days but could be longer  ( re test recommended)
13 - 18 nmol/L   Ovulation impending or just occurred. Estimated breeding window 2 - 4 days
19 - 31 nmol/L   Ovulation recently occurred. Estimated breeding window 1 - 3 days
32 - 64 nmol/L   Ova have matured, optimal potential for fertility.  Estimated breeding window  0 - 2 days
65 - 90 nmol/L   Ova have matured but aging, decreased potential for fertility.  Breed  at once
Above 90 nmol/L    Too late

Our bitches really do know how to keep us on our toes don't they - certainly a good number refuse to conform to the norm !   I would assume ovulation around Friday with rapidly rising progesterones so would say breed today, tomorrow if you haven't already. Do keep us posted on result

I know of the table and levels and what is supposed to happen at certain levels
she clearly does not :-) as her levels do not fit in with the timeframes on the table...
So would you say although her levels are high ( over 90 by tuesday?)
she could take even mated tue/wedn looking at the day she ovulated?
That is what I wondered, do the above table go out of the window if bitch does what mine has done?
We had 2 matings, sun&mon so in theory should have been there at right time?
I was just wondering for the future, what is the thing to do with bitch whose prog shoots up fast,
do you aim to mate when low levels e.g before or at ovulation( if bitch allows) is the period of successful mating shorter than with bitch whose levels rise slower etc...
Or do the eggs still take the same to mature after ovulation even if the progesterone numbers shoot up very fast?

Sounds as though you have got days right - so fingers crossed...

I have always been told if you mate on the early side you are likely to get a very small or no puppies.
No idea about the timing of eggs to mature if levels rise fast - doubt whether many people do!
