I've just contact my vet in advance for costs, Idexx are sending me the packs and needed to know the cost to take blood only, £21.21 is the cost, seems a lot to me... I'm taking the sample myself to the lab.
What does everyone else have to pay, not that I can see I will be able to barter on this :-/
I recently paid £12 each time the blood was taken.

Wonder if I can ring round local vets and wonder if they'd allow me to come to them if cheaper just for bloods?? That's a lot cheaper and I know you aren't far from me
Last time i had blood taken for progesterone testing it was taken by a nurse and I was charged £6. Perhaps you could ask for a nurse to do it.

our vet nurses take the blood, its' £6

Think it was about £16.00 for venepuncture at mine

Wow those are both c heap compared to here. Last time I had a basic kidney blood test doen by the vet himself about 5 years ago it was over £50.
It's about £50 - £60 to sign health certification in Pet Passport to fly.
walking through the door is £35.

£70 for one progesterone test here! They said if she needed more than one then they would only charge £20 for each further test. The blood was taken by a vet nurse and the "consultation" was the vet ringing up with the result and telling me which dates to visit the stud (which once I had the result I already knew)! Just as well I didn't start testing day 3 - 5 like they suggested.

Seems a lot to me, I've only ever paid between £10 and £13 for blood drawing. If you live close enough to Idexx in Wetherby to drop off a blood sample it could be worth considering using the vets that's close by
http://www.balancedbeing.com/ They charged about £10 the last time I enquired and they're only a stone's throw from Idexx.

£19 where I live, even when a vet took an hour to get bloods out of one of my girls. My poor girl was as good as gold and cannot believe that she allowed the vet to continue :( At one point I did ask to see the top vet at the surgery as I'd had enough. Will only ever use the vet I normally have do it from now on.

I'm not that far from Barbara and I agree with very similar costs. I pay almost £70 for blood taken and sent to Idexx. Whichever vet takes bloods is the one who calls you when results are received. I have never been told that a nurse was taking bloods. Just as well, as I would object.

My local vet wanted £70 just to take blood!
I now get it for £50 for the bloods&test by a specialist- results same day.
which I think is pretty good and similar if I paid for bloods, test&postage and would get results next day.i

I believe I'm also not that far from Barbara and JeanSW too. I must admit to a sharp intake of breath when told the cost. However compared to the cost of petrol to visit the stud ........... definitely still worth testing. The vet nurse had difficulty getting blood from a prominent vein in my girls neck. The second nurse who tried eventually got it. Six attempts in all! :(

My vet charges a full consult fee which is £32
Your all going to hate me... mine is the grand total of £0!!!! <3 my vet!

I had a ring round and one quoted £130 each blood test going to Greendale lab!!! I think the AI chap Hector Heathcote charges about £50 as he has a machine and said he would do a swab for cells as well. He's just outside Horley.

Just a general reply / request on a similar topic - do a lot of people just get the blood done by the vet and then send to Idexx direct then? My girl is due in season in a month or so and so I'm starting to think about the best way to ensure a successful mating - the stud dog is only an hour or so's drive, so I could just keep popping up there, but I'm more inclined to do pre-mate testing so as not to waste everyone's time. Have to take one of the others for boosters in a couple of weeks so will ask them their thoughts / costs on taking bloods and sending off versus just taking bloods. But is it cheaper to send it to Idexx yourself then, or is that only if you live near them and can take it up? Sorry if it's a silly question!

I use my own vet for blood and he sends it off to the lab they use for other samples that can't be tested in house via courier. The lab they use for other samples (North west labs ) is able to run a serum progesterone and I get the result back same day ( usually between 5 - 6 pm if blood taken to catch morning collection) so I would say check with your vet to see if their standard lab can run this test, if not you may be best ordering a kit from Idexx and post sample after vet blood draw.

Great, thanks!
