Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding white pugs
- By Burwat [gb] Date 29.12.13 16:45 UTC
Hi,
I don't post often but do read the forum quite a lot, I'm hoping the title of the post grabs attention, here goes.

This is a question I have been asked by a friend of mine recently and no matter how much I have tried to dissuade him he won't listen as in his words 'I can get upto 4 grand a piece for them' we had a bit of heated debate about this to the point he very nearly got a clip around the ear.

I have give my opinion on this to him but he is of the mind that I am biased as I have both black & fawn pugs and he has been advised by the top breeder in the country that breeding white pugs is absolutely fine and the only reason other breeders advise against them is that they are trying to protect their future sales. Again I told him this was ridiculous but again he feels I have a personal crusade against white, platinum, brindle pugs so as a last resort I am posting here in the hope some of you more knowledgable than me can reply so I can show him it's not just my opinion that he should not go ahead with this breeding.

I am really surprised by his wreck less attitude to the colours as he has been quite responsible in having his pug health tested.

Thanks in advance

Tony

Does he know he cannot KC register a Pug as white?
Look at this page: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/services/public/breed/colours.aspx?id=6164

Hi goldmali,

Tried telling him but apparently this breeder has told him there's a way around it, I would love to know who it is

Who is this 'top breeder in the country' ?     'Top' of what?

What is it that makes them 'top breeder' and who says they are?      Who voted them 'top' ?

In other words, why is it that this person's word is being so respected, against the KC and the responsible breeders who would advise against white pugs?

Or is it that this person is just telling your friend what he wants to hear and your friend is more enamoured of the money anticipated, than breeding healthy, typical pug pups?

I'm afraid once the pound signs are evident in people's eyes, it's almost impossible to talk any sense to them.    Money shouts louder :(

Its funny how often people boast about being "top breeders" but who are loath to reveal the actual name/kennel name.

The top breeder within any breed in the UK is the one with the largest number of show wins during the previous year (usually only CCs counted, but sometimes RCCs and championship BOBs too -depends on whether dog paper or breed club) -both dog papers do their own competitions and certainly many breed clubs do as well, so this should be a published fact.

Of course,  but if you don't show, anyone can claim to be a 'top breeder' and you wouldn't necessarily know where or how to check.

Which is why I asked ;-)

If it is the 'top breeder' does this advice conflict with the ethics of the breed clubs?

Wouldn't take much to be the Top Breeder of White Pugs, would it.....!

It isn't that woman that was on the tv a few months back as didn't she have pugs ?

I have no idea what the current Top Breeder (as per the Our Dogs table) would think about White pugs, but think it unlikely she is reccomending breeding them.  There is a kennel in Essex which claims to be the "Top Breeder" of white pugs - possibly based on quantity? I can readily believe they are pushing it, it is in there interest to sell potential brood bitches and get the stud fees back.  It seems to be a pool of breeders selling them among themselves for silly money and convincing each other they are worth it and will make them a fortune.  There has to come a point when it all folds up, a bit like a Ponzi scheme.  They can be KC registered, but will show as colour not recognised.  I am waiting with interest for someone who buys one as a pet to actually read what many of us have been saying and so come to accept the fact that what they have bought for several thousand is in fact a cross bred and been sold with falsified papers, the resulting legal case could be very interesting!  So far, the fad colour breeders are very convincing and do a good job in talking the puppy buyers into believing into their fairytales.

I have asked him who the self proclaimed top breeder is but he still hasn't told me.

It's a shame that so many people nowadays are only interested in making money than breeding to better their chosen breed, I really don't understand this rare colour none sense and the silly money they command. Stupid people wanting a dog as fashion accessory.

>I really don't understand this rare colour none sense

It's because people who know nothing about dogs, believe all the rubbish they hear.

I had a roof leak just before Christmas, and needed to get a roofer in fast.  He came down off the roof and asked to see where it was coming in, in the kitchen.  It's where my dogs were, so I asked if he was frightened of dogs.  When he said no, I did tell him to be prepared, as it really was a lot.  He looked as if he couldn't believe his eyes.  He hadn't heard any barking and seemed shocked that they were quiet.  He told me that he had a dog, but it was a rare one.  Yeah, a blue Staffie.

Top Breeder - yeah right.

For the record - the Pug Breed Standard - COLOUR
Silver, apricot, fawn or black. Each clearly defined, to make contrast complete between colour, trace (black line extending from occiput to tail) and mask. Markings clearly defined. Muzzle or mask, ears, moles on cheeks, thumb mark or diamond on forehead and trace as black as possible

So I guess this person will be registering these puppies as Silver.

KERCHING eh.    I guess it's a relief that this breeder hasn't decided to mate outside the Pug breed ...... one well-known general puppy/dog sale website has somebody advertising Pug X Basset, proudly suggesting they are 'rare' and to be snapped up.   Which I'd bet they will be.

If its the 'breeder' I am thinking of then I am sure they also breed Bulldogs and French Bulldogs in exotic colours as well. Admittedly they are very striking but I cannot see any point in them, the only reason these pups exist is to line the pockets of the people who produce them :( very sad.

Interestingly it seems blue Staffies are becoming less popular, it seems on the Facebook selling pages you cannot give them away! As long as the general public continue thinking that they are buying something 'rare' and unusual these litters will continue to be produced. A vicious cycle unfortunately :(
