Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Scanner wrong or time for vet?

My girl wS scanned at 34 days showing at least 5 pups. She has just whelped 3 good sized pups. It's been 2 hours since the last pup and she is very content feed the 3 pups and showing no signs that she has any more.
Just a little concerned she has more as the scan showed but I can't feel anything in her.
Do I need a vet or just be super happy at the pups she has?

As bitches can absorb up to 6 weeks post mating the pups may no longer be there, or simply the scanner counted some twice.

Of course she could still go on to p5roduce more, or even as I had produce another a day and a half later even though I and vet thought she was empty.

You won't know unless you x-ray her, which would probably be overkill..

Watch and wait, and if the least sign of something amiss then take to vet.

That's what I thought.
Figured at some point they had been reabsorbed but just a little paranoid as it all went so well.
A little reassurance is all you need sometimes.
All pups r feeding well and mum is very relaxed and happy with them. Feeding and cleaning them and she has eaten for the first time in days.
Called my vet as well just to be on the safe side and they said the same.
My girl and her 3 girls r doing well which is all that matters.  Numbers were never a concern as long as everyone was healthy.

I sometimes find after the first 2 or 3, the next take a bit longer to arrive as they have further to travel to the exit.  Unless your vet is excellent as scanning and counting pups I wouldn't rely on numbers by scan.  Good luck

Take her to the vet for a shot to clear out any retained material.   And to have the pups checked for abnormalities that may not be obvious.   It is possible for a bitch to reabsorb around 5 - 6 weeks, which may have happened.   If your vet thinks there are more puppies inside, he'll probably x-ray and then give her a shot.

This is why I don't do scans.   They only confirm, or not, a pregnancy at the time of the scan.   Not that the bitch will carry what's seen, to term.   Yes it helps in terms of numbers, or if the mating wasn't planned, but if you get her checked when you think she's finished, that should cover it all.

If I have doubts about pregnancy or numbers I will have a scan to make sure there isn't a singleton in there
