Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Barking when left

One of my dogs screams continually when left when I walk the other dogs. I am having neighbour problems and this is not helping. He is fine when I leave him at other times. The problem is only when I take the others out for a walk.  I have set up a recording device so know he screams and digs at the door continuously while i am out with the other dogs. I have tried changing the order of walks so he is walked first but he still does it when i take the second dogs out. I have too many dogs to walk them all together. I can't take him on both walks as he doesn't get on with one of the dogs on the other walk.
I have tried all the normal things such as leaving him with bones and kongs. they remain untouched. I have tried him crated and free. In different  rooms and on his own or with other dogs but nothing seems to make a difference. Short of not taking the dogs out for a walk at all has anyone any other suggestions. The only other option I have thought of is to clear out the cupboard under the stairs and put him in that as it is right in the middle of the house  with no windows so might  cut down the noise a bit so the neighbours can't hear it. I don't like the idea but it is bigger than a crate. I am getting desperate now :(

Is this the dog you are having rehomed ?. Sounds like it might be the best option if he's struggling being left alone and is facing time shut in a dark cupboard.

Can you leave him with one of the other dogs that he does get on with, then walk him and that other one together?

yes but unfortunately the rehoming is not going to happen for another month at lea\st due to various problems and I am having major neighbour problems. CUpboard will not be dark as it has a light and is a reasonable size about 6 x 8 ft but obviously a low ceiling in places.  but i agree I don't like the idea.

I have tried leaving him with the dogs that I walk him with but all that happens is that he carries on barking and then they join in with him :(

How many do u walk at a time? If he doesn't like one of the dogs on the second walk you could try switching him and the other dog around so he is walking with diffrent dogs.

The problem is that he barks continually when he is left at home while I walk the other dogs. The only way I can see to stop him would be to take the barker on both walks but that would mean the dog the barker hates would not get a walk at all. That is not ideal although I suppose it might be the only solution for now.

Can you muzzle one (or both) of the dogs that doesn't get on, then they can be walked together? It's only a temporary measure as your boy will be off to new pastures shortly.

Unfortunately he is terrorising the other dog who is now very scared of him. It would not be fair to the picked on dog to be walked with the barker :(

Have you tried leaving the house with a dog/dogs then returning imediately, before he has chance to react? Repeatedly do this, then as he is becoming familiar, increase the time spent outside.

So it would go something like this:
Leash dog/dogs, step out of door. Close door (if your barker remains silent, otherwise don't even close the door). Step back inside. Unleash dog/dogs, go pop the kettle on (or anything not remotely related to a pre-dog walk routine) & repeat.

Once your barker is getting the hang of the fact that you are returning (before he has chance to react), increase the time spent once outside. (close door, take one step away from door, then go back in).
Then increase to two steps from door etc...

If he is getting very unsettled with you just leashing up the other dogs, start off by not even leaving the house or approaching the door, simply leash all dogs, stand there for a couple of seconds & then un-leash them and repeat.

He is obviously not happy being left at these times, so the same approach you would use with a seperation anxiety problem will do the trick.Evry time you leave him and he barks, it only goes to make his problem worse, so you are best off avoiding leaving him for now, even if that does mean the other dog (that he doesn't get on with) is going witout walks for a little while (take barker on both walks for now as changing his barking reaction is going to take a while). You could do something else with that dog (the one being terrorised by barker), at home, to keep him stimulated and exercised (hide & seek, extra training, fetc etc...).

Met a dog like this before who would continually bark or howl if other dogs were taken from the house for a walk, but he was fine if his owner went out, you can understand how a neighbour would get fed up with it and there is not much to stop it......... unfortunately.

The only solution I could give a friend of mine who also did separate walks, due to her dogs needing differing exercise routines was to crate her 'howler' upstairs in the back bedroom with a cover thrown over the top, and the radio on, leaving treats and water in the crate whilst she was gone, she would then take out her elderly dogs, come back and let him out to re-join the house and then have his walk with the others, being upstairs and in the dark also in the room furthest away from her front door did stop the noise completely.

The cupboard may well work in the same way, however it may not be placed in the best area (depending on your house) to stop him still hearing you go out with the dogs and back again, causing him stress, you may also find that he could cause damage being shut in the cupboard, chewing, or digging at the door...... so I would go for a crate it is far safer.

Cutting off the senses does help a lot in cases like this, sight and sound being the most effective, my sympathies I heard my friends dog and it was horrendous, even if someone sat in whilst she went out it made no difference he was completely vocal all the time the other dogs were out, ( both bitches) some dogs just hate part of their pack going out without them.

Never seen a dog like it before, but the crating really did stop it. :-)

the idea of the cupboard was not so much to prevent him hearing me go out  more to prevent my neighbour hearing him barking. i could put the crate under the stairs but I am just concerned that if I crate him he might injure himself trying to get out of the crate. At the moment he spends most of his time digging at the door which is not doing the door or floor covering much good but is not hurting the dog.

No, it is your neighbour, presumed to be living a normal life without interfereing with anyone, who is having the problems with, quote: One of my dogs screams continually when left

At the moment he spends most of his time digging at the door

Well it will not matter for long, your pushing your neighbour to their limits & as sure as Eve never wore a fig lea the authorities will take the matter out of your hands & straight into the courts hands. We all get a bad name this nonsense, dogs are now about as popular as a bout of Flue.
