Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch in season still bleeding...
- By djmode [gb] Date 16.12.13 11:43 UTC
Hi My dog had the normal pattern of bleeding for 10 days or so, by which time the colour went to a pale straw colour. I then mated her twice in a 48 hour period on the 8th and then the 10th of December. However she is still bleeding and is no longer interested in mating i.e. no longer standing and her vulva has now reduced in size too.

So my question is has anyone else experienced something similar?

My bitches bleed for the full 21 days mated or not so to me this is usual.

Mine bleed all the way through the season, mated or not and pregnant or not.

One of mine bled until day 26 and went on to have 12 pups.

Yes.   Although once mated, most of my bitches would actually have a much reduced discharge to the end of their seasons, which I tended to take as a good sign (knowing they were still in season - so don't all shout!!), I had one who after two good matings, came back into a fairly significant, blood coloured discharge to around day 21.   At the time I wasn't 'worried' but thought she's never taken.    Her pregnancy was uneventful and resulted in 9 super puppies, 3 of which were so good we kept them (2 bitches and a male) and one, having come back with us from Canada, became a UK Champion with her sister winning enough, even if always in her sister's shadow, to perm.qualify her for Crufts.   Their brother's bite sadly 'went' by the time they came out of quarantine, but I allowed him to be used by an experienced breeder and he is back of a good number of UK hounds now.   To my knowledge the bite fault didn't come through - and in truth it was only a very slight underbite, caused I believe, mainly to him being fed his food very wet while in quarantine, causing them to have to graunch the bowl to get it up.   I wasn't impressed!   He might have been edge to edge had this not happened - still a fault in his breed, in the UK (but not in Canada).

I'd keep an eye on your bitch, in case what's going on is more significant (pyo, or other infection via the male, can't be ruled out - but there will be other symptoms)

I have only EVER had one bitch not bleed all the way through (other than a few silent seasons) and that is one I have just mated. All the others have continued for the full 21 days.

Some of mine bleed right the way through and have even had them do so for a full month.

Mine are rarely ready for mating earlier than about day 15 though, and often later.

In 45 years I have never seen "straw coloured" anything.  I once told a bitch that "the book" said, but it appears that she had not read the book.

For a lot of bitches day 8 and day 10 would be far too early.  Did you progesterone test?  If so please don't worry, I've had a bitch bleed all the way through to day 28!  She did have a litter, no problems.  If her vulva has reduced in size, that is when most of mine will stand for the dog.  Did she stand quite happily with no reluctance?  If so, keep calm, and wait!  :-)   :-)

I'm assuming that there is no nasty smell, and just the usual metallic smell of blood.

Marianne, just as a matter of interest, have you ever known a bitch mate on a silent season, and actually conceive?  I have had silent seasons (or a couple of my bitches have) but they weren't mated, so I never had the opportunity to find out.

I've never had reason to try, but had a mismating once when I had no idea the bitch was in season. (Her seasons had been very irregular due to her having been injected with Delvosterone  to stop them, twice. Just one reason for why I will not do that again.) This was before I'd ever heard of Alizin (not sure if it existed then or not) so I opted to have her spayed as she was 8 years old, and when spayed she was found to be pregnant in the  early stages.

My girls always seem to come back into full blown season after mating.
