Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Losing water from day 57
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 09.12.13 18:30 UTC
My friends bitch is on day 59 ( I think ) from day 57 she has been losing water  . Her owner says it's not wee , just clear fluid with no smell . She has been sitting in her whelping box a lot and looking round at her back end. I haven't seen the dog but was wondering is this normal for the bitch to lose water like this .
My instinct would be that it isn't right but that's only because I've never experienced it  before .
Any advice would be appreciated and passed on , Thank you x

I know with the litter that I'm currently helping look after, that the bitch was leaking prior to whelping. Apparently it was quite scary but actually just turned out to be the fluid that lubricates the birth canal.

If she's at all worried then I think a visit to the vet is in order. I'm sure with the wealth of experience of breeders we have here you'll get an answer first, though :)

Sounds like she could be in labour.

If it's gone on for a couple of days, and nothing produced, I would be concerned about inertia.

Being interested here, even at this early stage?
Only asking as recently was asked by someone online about a pregnant rescue cat (date of mating unknown) which was leaking small amounts,10 or so days before she finally gave birth. To say I was relieved when she did, was an understatement as I'd been thinking inertia as well!

Me too with this one Jean SW.   It's less likely for a b itch to whelp early, and the earlier she does, the less likelihood the puppies are to be able to survive.   My only advice would be to at least contact a vet, just in case.

100% yes in my breed.  I realise that waiting with my breed is a car crash waiting to happen..

So many times on CD I've given advice (which has been ignored), and when we hear of the eventual section needed, several days later,  I think immediately of the poor bitch having to wait.

Agree with you jean I often see your advice and will them to take heed from your extensive knowledge with a difficult breed but you can only try and share and hope people will listen.

Just a quick update , they spoke with the vet who reassured them that losing some water can be the bitch getting ready. The pups arrived on day 63 , 10 survived , 2 still born, mother and puppies are said to be doing well.
Thank you all for the advice x

Wow that was a huge litter, I'd expect she was loosing some urine with that much weighing on her bladder.

That's what I had said , but she said there was no smell. I still think she had to be leaking a bit,  from the photo's I have seen she was huge .
