Have you checked the back of her tongue and her throat?
- By colliepam Date 06.12.13 15:53 UTC
checked as far as we can,-very small throat!nothing untoward to see.She can stop doing it,mind.Could it be a habit?

A behavioural cause is what sprung to my mind.

I'd say that, as a new behaviour, I'd be tempted to ask for a second opinion from the vet.  It isn't normal and might suggest a level of discomfort.

Before you go it's worth waiting until she is really relaxed and having a good look with a bright torch.  I have seen this type of behaviour when one of mine had a strong thin piece of grass wrapped around a tooth, which irritated his tongue and throat (took me a while to find it though as it was almost see through).  I've also seen it as a pre vomit response - or when the dog is actively trying to avoid vomitting.

Here is another hypothesis which I had read but forgotten where til I Googled!  "It is a calming technique used by dogs either when they are feeling especially happy, or when they need to calm themselves in a situation they are not sure of. If your dog is acting a bit nervous, try blinking your eyes, licking your lips and yawning while turning your head slightly. It is funny to watch them solemnly do it back to you. I learned this from the book "On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas. An excellent read by the way."

Thanks.it is odd,Chrissy wondered if its because she licks the carpet-for some reason-,and it might be hairs on the tongue?
