Anybody else do this? For those who don't know, it's using gps to find a cashe (box) containing notebook and swappable objects (if you want to). I thought it might add a bit of interest to a walk in a new area. We have a motorhome so are often somewhere completely new and have no idea where some good walks might be. The cashes are usually in interesting places and more often or not in good walking areas. A number of people with dogs go geocashing, so we thought we would have a go. So have the gps device and in the next few days plan to see if we can find the few located in our village, they are not always easy to find and although the gps will guide you to with a few feet, a bit of ingenuity is needed to actually find the thing. Perhaps I can train the dog to be a cashe search dog! :-)

There were a few people on here who used to do it - I signed up to the site at the time but never actually did any.  I know a lot of people who do it now - in the agility world that is - whenever they go to a show they do the walks around and find caches!  Very popular!

Yes, we've been geocachers for about 10 years. Great fun, especially when you're on holiday or visiting a new area. You get to go to places you wouldn't otherwise know about. :-)

i know someone who  does this and raves about it!! sounds like a great idea. makes a walk far more interesting and an opportunity to explore new places. I guess its a more technical modern version of 'letterboxing'

We used to do it but have fallen out of the habit - it was quite fun!

This must be the geocache with the fewest 'finds', closely followed by these!

It says it's 2800 odd miles from my home. Nothing about it being straight up. :-)

I have twice stumbled across a cache site - the first time it was next to a gate in a field of sheep and I assumed at first that the notebook and pen might have been a vet/farmers log for medication!!  That one remained in situ for about two weeks then was moved.  Who moves them?

The second box I found was only after one of my boys had peed on it.  I decided to take it home and wash it then return it later that afternoon (the box was slightly open and he'd made the notebook damp!).  I do hope no one was searching whilst it was missing.

I can really see the appeal of this hobby - even if you don't look too hard for the actual box the walks in new places are enough of an incentive to give it a go :)

Who organises geocaching?  Do you use a website, do you have to be a member, pay a fee etc?

You are now Mugglers, dogs a babe. Apparently it is a term for non geocashers who stumble across a cashe. Who knew! We found one by chance a couple of years ago, but I realised what it was, so after having a look, we put it back.

As to where to go to find out about it, I've just joined a website called geocashing.com and that seems to be the main place to go. There's lots of information to be found there. It's free to be a basic member which I am, but you will pay to be a premium member which has a few added perks. The basic membership allows you to lots so fine for us. People can make a cashe, there is lots of info how etc, but there are literally thousands and thousands all round this country. Go to the map and put in your postcode and see if there are any on your local walks.

It's organised through Geocaching.com. It's free to join too! :-)

I wondered what that app was for on my phone!
