Hi All,

It seems there is a huge outbreak of kennel cough in Cornwall where we live at the moment. This normally would not be too much of a problem for us as we live in the middle of nowhere and are fortunate to have a lot of non public woods to walk our dogs in...however,we also run a large shoot here and from the end of next month will have dogs from all over the county coming here to work several days of the week.

I feel it is inevitable that we are going to be exposed and wanted to know if anyone has successfully prevented KC with nosodes. I did try nosodes for KC from Ainsworths last year and my dogs did develop a mild huffy cough but not the full blown honking. Strange thing was they had had no contact with any dogs prior to this coughing and  ainsworths thought it was probably aggravation from the nosodes so because of this I am a bit concerned about using them again. Has anyone else experienced this aggravation or dogs developed symptoms after starting kc nosodes?

Am also thinking possibilities of garlic and fenugreek or other immune boosting supplements,

Thanks all,

I've used Ainsworth's nosodes for many years and my dogs didn't get kennel cough when they had contact with it both at dog shows and with dogs in the grooming parlour.
As it's in the area I would probably use them again as now,  but after them last year and having a mild cough last year, I would also hope that they have developed their own immunity.
The problem with kennel cough is the different strains.  :)

That should have read

The problem with kennel cough is the different strains whether you are using conventional nasal vaccine or nosodes.

The trouble with nosodes would be whether Boarding Kennels would accept this?    And as viral KC mutates, like the human flu, trying to keep up with the current strain can be difficult.    The good news about vaccination is if a dog picks this up, despite being vaccinated (or presumably treated with nosodes) he should shake it off fast.   Unlike an unprotected dog, especially a puppy or elderly dog, who could become quite ill.    There is always the risk of it going to pneumonia.
