I have found myself caring for a 4 week old puppy today, she is very poorly. When I picked her up early she was freezing cold (despite being in someones bra and the heating on full (it was very warm in the house). She is unable to stand on her back legs but there has to be feeling as she can move them. she weighs about 380gs (couldn't get an exact reading due to faulty scales) all the other pups are 3 time her size and the lightest is about 976g. She is very tiny.
I am thinking she may have a deficiency of sorts. Anyone have any advice?
I have her on a microwave heat pad and she isnt crying but is making noises. I warmed her up and ended up force feeding her to get fluids into her, as she would not lap/make an effort to take a bottle, because she was so dehydrated.
I have hand reared puppies and kittens in the past but never had one that isnt regulating its temperature like this at this age, Puppy is making no effort what so ever.

I would advise taking her to the vet. She needs to be put on a drip and medicated properly.

if you don't take her to the vet ASAP I think you could loose her

Sorry for not replying but I have been at the vets this morning and then had a million and one things to do with a puppy in toe.

Vets are not sure what is wrong with her, there is no explanation. She is too tiny to draw up bloods from her (said if she is anemic taking blood will probably kill her), she isnt making an effort to drink but slight progress as now I dont need to tube her she is receptive of a forced syringe feed, rather than just letting it flow back out. vets prescribe convalescent feed to be fed at a higher mix ratio to her every 2 hours.

When she is strong enough they said they will treat her then, but the priority right now is getting her strong enough. have to take her back in a week IF she survives. Her temperature is still dropping very fast when ever she is off her heat pad. Vets said they have never seen it before even in younger puppies. Skin to skin contact is not warming her. Thanks for responding.

>she is receptive of a forced syringe feed

I have never known an animal survive force feeding.  I had a puppy PTS a week too late because I was trying so hard.  It is a guilt that will last forever with me.  I really believe that we take too much out of their hands.

I have no intentions of just giving up on her, but I have decided that if she is not lapping and eating by Thursday or in any way deteriorates, I WILL do what ever is needed.

At least today she is not needing a tube and although doesn't want to drink she is. So maybe she just needs a boost.

I had a pup like this a few years ago, the vet nurse very kindly took him home, she tube fed him and 5 days later I took him home and he went back to mum and survived. he is now 4 years old and an awsome boy he is. good luck to you and I really hope you get a good outcome xx
