Topic Dog Boards / General / Does any one else feel sorry for the Poodle

I feel so sorry for the poodle - well the lovers of the breed I wonder if they are pulling out their hair. So many "Oddles" about.
I actually really like Poodles and if I could bring myself to separate my heart from Staffords I would have a poodle a "real poodle!" not an Oddle.
Today I was out with Bella and  after putting her in the car I went over to chat to a chap with a white miniature I went over looked at the dog and before I could say anything he said "He's castrated" I said "Okay" I just wondered about his miniature poodles breeding/health/etc as he looked a nice dog. He was kinda relieved and take aback I think he said loads of people ask him if he wants his dog to mate with anything from a pug to a Labrador and he was fed up.

I did feel for him. Such a lovely breed.

I agree; it seems that people only want poodles so that they can breed away from them. How insulting. :-(

Poor bloke.
Mind you, anyone with a dog (even mixed breeds) these days, seems to get asked "when" it's going to be bred from.

I know how he feels :-(

I got fed up of people asking me to put my pretty Afghan X to any skanky bitch they had,  they seemed convinced that they'd get pups like him     Whenever I tried to explain that genes did't work like that, they'd get snotty, as if I was being selfish

I get depressed seeing all the stupidly bred crosses.  Why anyone would actually breed for an unmanageable coat is beyond me, but that's the reality.   Then the poor dogs suffer because their stupid, lazy owners won't care for their coats properly

Lately I get told how Bedlingtons are only bred for crossing with Whippets to get Lurchers - grrr   Or that they are a
Poodle/Whippet cross

Where do these people keep their brains?

I can answer that, and it has a lot to do with the anatomy of the dogs in question.

they don't. They say they are breeding for easy to manage hypo allergenic coats. But maybe 1 in 10 might have a coat like that. Problem is by the time the owners realise that the adorable looking pup they bought is not going to have a good coat they love the pup so put up with the coat by having it shaved off every few months. What is needed is for all these people who get a hard to manage coat to return their dog to the breeder and  insist on a full refund because the dog was mis-sold. Unfortunately that won't happen. And people who get a dog with a hard to manage coat don't realise they are actually in the majority. They think they were just unlucky to pick the one with the untypical coat. Puppy buyers doing proper research including speaking to a groomer might just help stop them getting ripped off by the unscrupulous breeders making fraudulent claims.

I thought KC were going to register these doodle dogs or something along those lines, so what was that all about anybody know?

A couple have moved into the village who have a goldendoodle and I have to admit she is a very sweet looking dog. Her coat is lovely, all silky white curls, but they have to have her sheared every few months and spend quite a bit of time in between caring for that coat to keep it so nice. They are obviously happy to spend the time and money doing that, but so many people can't be bothered or think they don't have to and then you get these poor matted souls who smell awful.
I was quite taken aback to find out how much care and attention a poodle coat needs when some of the poodle owners on here wrote about it. I hadn't realised. Now if I, who have owned several breeds of dog over the years and think of myself as an experienced dog owner, doesn't realise what is required, what chance do Mr and Mrs Innocent stand especially when they are spread lies about how they don't shed etc etc. And breathe.

I was in the Post Office with my Toy the other day when a lady commented on how nice it is to see a 'proper' poodle instead of all these crosses.
I must admit that I often think that poodles are a dying breed - I hope it isn't so as they are such a fun breed to live with.

ETA my poodle gets a brush through twice a week and clipped every 6 weeks - I don't think that's a lot.

No They can't get rid of Poodles. You need a purebred Poodle to create all these crosses. I am not sure the anti purebred dog people realise that you can't create these fancy doodles without a Poodle to cross with.

Try walking a good looking male Cavalier around!

I have just the same problem with my whippet/bedlington cross, very much a scrawny, wormy and full of fleas foster pup when I got him but he stayed as he very quickly and became one of the family. I would be rich if I had a £1 for every person that asked if they could breed their dog with him to 'hunt rabbits'. Errrr no, not only is he neutered, hes as soft as butter and he isnt named after a muppet for nothing!

I cant remember the last time I saw a proper KC poodle of any type around here :(

I've often wonder this about Poodle people.   How they must feel being involved in all this 'oodle-breeding.  I know how I feel when I see my beloved Bassets mixed with other breeds.   There are people breeding several generations into their Basset/Springers.   I know they used to breed Bassets, but clearly have found a market for this mix which once out of the cute puppy stage, just look like what they are - mutts.   Neither one thing, nor the other.   And I can't see why they don't concentrate on developing a good line of either breed rather than all this - oh let me think why. .......   £££  !   And then there's the guy mixing the Basset with Shar Pei "to improve the breeds".   Really.   I remonstrated with him and got that.

I suppose it must be the same for any true follower of a breed these days, but all this 'oodle, or poo breeding makes me sick, and very concerned for the future of dogs generally.

We do see a number of toy and even one standard Poodle here on the N.Cornwall coast - but the percentage of purebred dogs, of many comparatively 'rare' breeds here, is amazing.    We have anything from Mastiffs to Segugio Italiano living here.
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 01.12.13 13:31 UTC
No more so than I feel sorry for reputable breeders of Labs or Goldens or Cocker Spaniels.

Actually, I'm seeing more real poodles around, especially standard poodles.  I'm not a poodle person so whether they are well bred from a good kennel I can't really tell.  There seem to be a lot more poodle entries in competitive venues lately as well.

There are three types of people that stop to admire my poodle
1. Those who admire a purebred
2. Those who want to tell me all about their oodle or doodle or whatever it is and wonder why their dog hasnt got the coat or temperment or looks of my poodle. Dur...if you want it to look like a poodle...get a poodle!!
3. Those who want to breed from him

its frustrating and sad. A good looking purebred is becoming a rareity. When it depresses me I have to remember the #1 people who, like me, admire the pedigrees and are angered by the intentional crosses by people who havent got a clue merely to keep up with fashion and by the idiots who buy them!
- By wendles [gb] Date 02.12.13 15:21 UTC
I have a toy poodle and have started to tell people she has been spayed , as I am paranoid someone steals her.I have had a lot of people ask when not if I am going to breed her and when I say I am not they tell me how much I can get for her puppies its a worry.
- By Carrington Date 02.12.13 19:22 UTC
It is a shame, I would be so wary if I were a Poodle breeder today, the heavy restrictions some responsible breeders put on their pups I can fully understand and I definitely would be expecting to get the third degree during vetting. It must get to Poodle breeders a lot as it is the most popular cross breed at the moment.

In fact I am really pleased I don't breed Poodles, it would send me insane worrying about all the scammers out there after my pups, it's hard enough vetting normally. :-(
- By parrysite [gb] Date 03.12.13 19:42 UTC
I met a lady with a 'cockavpoo' - a cockerpoo x cavapoo, and a 'malchipoo'- a Maltese x chihuahua x poodle in a pet shop the other day. They looked like badly bred poodles with nightmare coats. Of course they were never going to get sick as they aren't unhealthy pedigrees.. rather surprisingly (or not) the owners were not aware of any health tests for the breed. Not that it matters of course because their vet said the puppy was healthy when they went for their jabs!!

They weren't best pleased when I said I remember when we used to call them mongrels ;)

There is an article in Your Dog mag about the Crossbreed & Mongrel club bemoaning the fact that membership is falling quite rapidly..................

They weren't best pleased when I said I remember when we used to call them mongrels

and that is the obvious answer...............if it cost that much it CAN'T be a mongrel :-D :-D

Here's  one that gets fed up with the phone ringing with people asking if they can use my Min boy on their Cocker,Shih Tzu,Malti and various other breeds. I usually just tell them that he is not at public stud but thanks for the offer.
When I,m out and meet someone that tells me they have a Cockerpoo I usually reply that I have a "proper poo" the look on their face makes me smile as I walk away.
