I have an almost 5 month old Newfoundland who has been having diarrhea for about a week, poor thing :(.  He had been eating Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy Formula and one day starting having the runs, only at night.  We did take him to the vet, and after fasting for about 18 hours, we put him on a bland diet of Hill's ID wet food for four days and gave him two tablets a day of Sulfasalazine.  His diarrhea seemed to stop.  At that time we decided to switch him to a higher quality food than the Purina so we started mixing in Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice Formula on the last day of feeding him the Hill's ID.  The first day went well, but as soon as we went full Diamond Naturals, the runs started up again but this time during the day.  Could this be because of his previous issue before starting the bland diet, or a side effect from not taking more time weaning him onto the new food?  We're unsure of what to do next.  Please help!

Just wanted to recommend Slippery Elm powder (Dorwest Herbs sell it). Excellent for treating stomach upsets :) hope he is feeling better soon, poor boy.

If he is not being sick or is ill then I would feed him boiled chicken/fish and mashed potato (Nothing added) for a couple of days then gradually introduce the dry food over a few days. If that does not help then a trip back to the vets. I would be tempted to try and introduce a raw diet to be honest, green tripe, Chicken necks or/and carcasses, or a minced chicken if you don't fancy the idea os bones as it is included, lamb, oily fish veg and some organ meat. Eggs, yoghurt and tinned tuna/sardines in oil. Less tummy upsets with raw if your dog is OK on raw. Some just cannot take it but most are great on a raw diet.

Yes I have a Malinois who started getting diarrhoea at 6 months of age and nothing we did worked. Tried every food imaginable, vet visits, medication, etc etc. Then somebody suggested trying him on raw. He's now 5 and will still get diarrhoea if he as much as steals one piece of commercial dog food or treat off another dog, but he is 100 % healthy when fed raw only. He ONLY gets raw meat and bones, never vegetables or anything else, and for him it has worked extremely well.

probably not the same problem at all, but my rescue Newfi was exactly the same - turns out she cannot tolerate rice, pasta, cereal etc. On the brilliant advice of someone on here I now have her on Simpsons salmon and potato and she is great. Vet kept telling me to feed chicken and rice freshly cooked and of course that was making matters worse. What breed line is she?

If it is of any help, I have found peanut butter to be very good at helping with loose motions. I gave my rescue pup a teaspoon of it twice a day. Might be all in my head but she loved it:-)
