Hi everyone
My oldest elkhound(Asa) has been licking my staff(Archer) for the last couple of months-not just now and again but as often as he can .He mainly licks inside his ears and INSIDE his mouth although he will also lick his feet and other parts occasionally.I have tried stopping him but he just starts again when my backs turned.Archer does not seem to mind but its driving me crazy.Asa is very dominant over Archer so its not a submissive gesture and Archer is in good health apart from his leg.
Any suggestions as to why they have started this behaviour-Im puzzled!!!
Archer.

Given thew chance my youngest bitchjust loves to lick my feet. I happen to like it, but the kids think it is gross!!! :DE

I knew someone who had a bitch who kept licking their other dogs ears, until they were wringing wet, the only way they were able to stop her was to crate her, as she just had this fetish, and it was assumed it was mothering as it was a bitch doing this.

Is the staff smelly or have any skin trouble. Elkhounds are normally particularly clean, and will remove any trsce of dirt from their person in a cat like manner. I have noticed that some short coated breeds have oilier coats amd smell doggier than the northern breeds, maybe Archer is particularly fastidious, and reckons his friend is a little stinker :D

Hi Barbara
I think you may have hit the nail on the head(I hope).Archer does smell a bit doggie but because of his leg I was putting of bathing him-the last thing I want is for him to slip in the bath.
Thanks ,Nikki.

Why do staffs lick so much?
My staffie will lick Hubbys head until shes washed the whole lot! If he moves out of her way she move her way so she can get to him again to finish off.
We've wondered if it could be one of 3 reasons. 1 that its the mothering instinct in her, 2 that she likes the salt from sweat or 3 that she thinks Hubby doesn't wash his hair enough so she just does it for him!!

Our puppy bitch has always loved to lick the inside of our older dogs ears and he loves it!! :D When we asked the vet about it he told us that dogs clean earwax tastes very sweet to other dogs so as gross as it is to us, dogs love it!!
It is supposed to be seen as a sign of affection! As long as she doen't try it with me!! :D YUK!

I've got a pup with an even stranger licking habit! Mikey loves to lick my eldest cat Milo's ears, head - everything. Now Milo looks as though he's had his hair specially gelled at Vidal Baboons!
I can't understand why it bothers people if their dogs lick ears etc.... if they both enjoy it, why on earth worry??? I'm only too glad they seem so fond of each other. Milo will even present his furry little head to be licked by Mikey..'Now this ear, please!' They also cuddle up to each other and play - other two cats are more cautious though!

My first real encounter with a staff about 12 years ago was with a friend who had a staff dog he used to sit and lick the back of her toddlers head until that was wringing wet and he also did it to my children when i took them round maybe its the mothering instinct coming out in the staffs
