Can you change your dogs KC name?  I think I already know you can't but I just wondered if anyone knew of a way of doing it.  I've recently got a puppy and had no say in his KC name.  I have recently received the paperwork and.....his name is TERRIBLE!  That bad that I can't even add my affix as the name is so awful.  The owner of the bitch is more used to breeding working gundogs and has named my showline working dog like a field springer!  I wanted to do things with him but I am mortified with the name.
Any ideas?

Yes, under certain circumstances you can. :-) A friend's new pup had the most ghastly registered name ('Jimmy's Jingle Jangles' - after Jimmy Savile! :-o ) but the KC agreed that it could be changed. I'm not sure how it was done but it was. So definitely contact them about it.

As long as the dog hasn't been shown or bred from, then you can change the name with the permission of the breeder. I believe it costs £50 to do so though.

However I am also led to believe that you then can't change it again ie: add your own affix. I wanted to change my most recent bought in pup (nice name that I chose but my friend the breeder has terrible spelling so its mis-spelt) but I was told I couldn't do that and then add my affix. As my issue wasn't that the name was offensive I've had to live with the mistake and just add my own affix as that was more important to me.

Oh, this is promising!  I will definitely be phoning in the morning then.  OH is going to have a fit when he hears how much though :(  but I feel it's worth it.  Lot to be said about a decent name!

It's form 7 you need. Here's a link to help you find it.

Great.  And £30!  Just need to speak to his breeder but I don't see it being a bother to her.

I'm intrigued now.    What name could be so mortifying ?          (apart from Jimmy's jingle jangles - that's plain offensive and I'm surprised the KC didn't disallow it!)

I know that one person's nice is another one's nasty.    But mortifying?

I think it would be good to fess up here and see if we agree ;-)

I do think you are right to want to change it though, if you feel that badly about it.

One of the things I took a lot of trouble with, and wanted the new owners to feel happy with, was our pup's names.    I wanted them to feel proud of their new babies and this is part of it   :-)

I was able to have a bit of a choice of my pups KC name. The breeders had decided to go for designers names I was given a few to choose from and went for (affix) Mulberry. It was nice to have a bit of a say in her name, although I really wanted to know as I was debating what to call her and wondered if there was something in her KC name I could use. But decided to go with what I had been thinking all along. Didn't fancy shouting Mulberry across the fields!

I registered a puppy as AFFIX ALANIS and sold that particular puppy......as a PET!

The owner rang me months later to say they'd had it changed by the KC because it was SO AWFUL.
Ok it's in the beholder ......but a Pet Puppy? Most pet owners put the paperwork in a drawer and seldom look at it again.
They changed it to AFFIX ALICIA. :-)

How weird! Not like they'd ever have to use it!

Toolz, were they able to do it without your permission?

I thought the breeder had to agree.

I name mine in an alphabetic theme using |polish words, and would hate it if one of the owners changed the registered name so it was out of step.

I take a lot of time deciding on names.

As you said few 'Pet' owners even remember the registered name, as half of them never bother to transfer them into their names.

I knew nothing until the owner rang me and its not the first time it's happened. Not recently though but then perhaps no one has been dissatisfied since.

On MyKc it seems they transferred her to their name but they never bred from her (endorsed).
