Or is it living in the countryside, where gunshots and bird scarers are far more common occurrences than things like buses, bikes and kids? Is it what they get used to? Would it be an idea for people to use CDs with firework noises on all year round?

Just to clarify, yes, I will leave my eldest son home alone with the dog, my eldest is 15 years old, the dog gets shut in the living room with a babygate and my eldest son will follow the rules of staying out of the living room.
