My 7 year old daughter has decided that she doesn't want to eat 'dead animals', which is fine by me, but I don't know how to get protein into her diet.
She won't eat Quorn or yogurt but does eat cheese, eggs and drink milk.
Any suggestions would be great.

Is she alright with nuts? They are a good source of protein. Does she include fish in her dead animals ban?
- By St.Domingo Date 31.10.13 21:39 UTC
She eats nuts, but no fish or anything with onions in !

Dried apricots, pulses such as chick peas and kidney beans, avocado apparently.
She may not stick to it, bacon sandwiches seem to be the downfall of many a vegetarian it was with my daughter. On the other hand my niece has been a vegetarian since about six years old, now 32, and stuck with it although she will occasionally eat chicken (and bacon rolls).

Just need some non spicy recipes for pulses now !

Well I've been a vegetarian since I was 13, am 47 now, and have never worried about protein or gone looking for it. My son decided to turn veggie when he was 12, completely off his own back (his older sisters eat meat), and he's been staying off meat for over a year now. There's plenty of ready made meals available, including with various nuts in. :) I fully understand not wanting Quorn as it TASTES like meat so to me it will always be a big no no.

I've never liked the idea of Quorn, since although it was known to be edible and non poisonous, it was still tested on animals before being released as a foodstuff! How ridiculous is that.

I have also been told that it's off the menu for diabetics as it contains hidden sugar.

Much of India is vegetarian, and the basic diet for many is grain, pulses and dairy products, together with some fruit and veg. Apparently this is a perfect nutritional balance, so to mimic that you could eat wholemeal bread, lentils/beans, plus cheese/yogurt/milk.

I visited a family in India, friends of friends, basically poor subsistence farmers who rented out a spare mud hut to intrepid backpackers, and was invited to share chappatis and chai (milky tea) with the family, while helping the children with their English homework! They couldn't even afford rice very often, but chappatis and dhal with dairy formed their everyday diet.

How about nut butters?  You can make your own almond one easily enough if she gets sick of peanut butter.  And quinoa - fabulous stuff packed full of protein that you can add to salads or cook with (I made a great chicken balti the other night with it!).

Greens such as spinach are good too.

My daughter has been a veggie since she was 10 years old.  I said that I wouldn't prepare veggie food all week f she asked for a McDonalds but she never has. :)
I didn't think she'd stick to it but she has and is now 35!

Easy and tasty nut loaf recipe for Christmas?  Even meat eaters eat this! :)
2oz butter or Margerine
1 onion chopped
4 oz chopped mushrooms (I have to leave this out as she's allergic!)
1/2lb brussel sprouts
1/2lb cooked chestnuts (I find a tin much easier!)
4oz chopped peanuts
2 beaten egga
pinch of nutmeg
parsley and salt and pepper to season

Cook onion and mushrooms.  Boil brussels and chop.  Mash chestnuts and mix all ingredients together.  Cook at 180 deg for 45 minutes.  Enjoy.

She has been eating raw spinach today !
I also got some apricots, almonds and houmous.

How do you cook the quinoa ! Do you just add hot water like cous cous, or boil it like rice ?
- By georgepig [gb] Date 01.11.13 22:28 UTC
Add double the amount of water as quinoa and simmer for about 20 mins. The grains go spiral like as the germ separates. Most is prewashed now so you don't have to do anything with except chuck it in a pan.   I often cook it just in water and add it to a salad but it will take on the flavour of what it's cooked in and there are LOADS of recipes online.

She could mix all those things you've bought today together in a lovely salad and the quinoa will bulk it a little.

Almond butter is easy-just keep blending almonds in a food processor until the oil comes out and it starts to go creamy; but beware this can take about 10 minutes!!! If I buy peanut butter I get the whole earth one as there is no added sugar but just peanuts, oil and salt.

We're wheat and gluten free here.

We also have a growing 16 yo  who can't have wheat or gluten and is hungry all the time.   We try to limit the amount of meat we eat and get plenty of vegetables/legumes into our diet.

I find pancakes are great to fill him up :-)    We also use a lot of Gram flour (chick pea flour)     There's a recipe on the side of the bag for Bhajis  and there's 15 Gram flour recipes here to get you started :-)

This may be a good opportunity to get her interested in cooking :-)

I'm a passionate cook and eater and I've been veggie since 1993. I LOVE cooking and missing out on meat  opened up a whole new lot of ingredients for me that I may have never tried before.

good luck, ive been a veggie for34 years,i understand that its more important a child gets all the nutrients she needs, and i understand your concern,i think you ought to congratulate yourself that your child is so sensitive!none of mine were bothered, and i didntpush my views on them. You could contact the vegetarian society for advice, but Im sure you ll be fine-after all, even beans or cheese on toast is a veggie meal,it doesnt have to be complicated.Best of luck to you and your daughter!
