Thought this should be shared :- http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news/health/health-news/alarm-after-three-puppies-not-vaccinated-against-rabies-found-in-peterborough-1-5632332

unfortunately this is not the first time this has happened and have heard of several cases of puppies being brought in from Eastern Europe that are too young to have the rabies vaccine.Would be interesting to know the breeds concerned as the cases I have heard about have been mainly Frenchies.

And the two cases of Rabies in the Netherlands . The affected puppies were imports from Bulgaria, I believe.
Only a question of time  before we have an outbreak in the UK.

It was not an"outbreak"in the Holland, it was two puppies from the same litter from Bulgaria. There have been no other cases connected to these two puppies(ie no human or animal has contracted rabies from them)

An outbreak is "a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease"

This is not the case here, it is worrying because the puppies were legally imported as was the puppy in 2012 that had Rabies(albeit from Morocco) & was under the age that the rabies vaccination is usually given

Why the pedantry ? Although these two cases are most certainly unwelcome and sudden. I posted about the Netherlands puppies on another thread last week.
We should be worried because there have been many reports in the media over the last year or so regarding illegal imports of puppies from Eastern Europe. No documentation for vaccination /health status has been supplied by those importing the puppies.
A question of time as I said.

I don't understand how they get into the country without the correct paperwork, who checks these things? Or are they getting through the same way that illegal imigrants do smuggled on the back of lorries??????? We need to tighten up our boarders in every way possible, or you are right it won't be long before we have rabis making its appearance here.

At least these ones have been spotted thanks to veterinaries, but makes you wonder how many get through that haven't yet been found, and how many have dodgy paperwork aswell. **shudder**

They are puppies that go through the checks at the border but the paperwork is shonky

The puppies in Holland had had their Rabies vax, but has previously contracted Rabies The single pupp in Holland from Morocco was too young to have a rabies vax

Dear, dear, that article is shocking, we're in for a heap of trouble by the look of it......... all I can say is 'buy British' and stay that way before the country suffers.

With one obviously exception with regards to reputable breeders and people who show or work their dogs, we often need new blood from other countries to enhance what we have, and all would be done legitimately and above board in such cases, but other than that......... unless a very rare breed, why does anyone else need or want a dog from another country? We have plenty here, more than we can cope with.

Is it because they are selling cheap? Never mind the genetic health scares and temperament issues, but do people really know where the pups have even come from?  For the pet buyers looking for a cheaper dog, is it really worth it? Pet shops and puppy farmers and some rescues could very well be bringing in problems for us all.

We don't want rabis back in this country and people looking for cheap dogs from overseas, is one certain way of bringing it back IMO.

Have just been forwarded a memo from our local Hospital Trust informing of a kitten found to be affected by Rabies in North West France. The memo also informed of the two cases in the Netherlands.

I read about the kitten online over the weekend. It was said to be an adopted stray, although the rabies strain it had originated from Morocco.

As this is the first case of rabies in France for many years, I would expect all EU countries to be stepping up their border checks where possible, and I hope the UK will do likewise.

Doesn't appear to be any different. I just brought my new puppy over from the Netherlands on Thursday, the scanner was passed into the car for us to scan him, the passport control lady couldn't even see what I was scanning - it could have been a chip in an envelope next to the dog!
