More and more recently my 5year old beagle has been 'leaking' from his bottom.
It's an awful metal type smell and is quite hard to get rid of. (Especially frustrating as we let him on the sofas!)
I did a bit of googling and booked him in at the vets to have his anal glands emptied. The nurse did this fine and she said they were half full so needed doing. There was no sign of cysts etc.

I thought that would be problem solved. Since then (around two weeks ago) my boy is still leaking every now and then! It's not as strong smelling. But it's still happening and he still sometimes rubs himself on the floor or a scoots if you know what I mean?

Is he ok? I think I'm going to rig the vets but don't want to be one of those people lol! Does any one have any experience or advice when it comes to this sort of thing so I can be pre warned or know what to query etc.

Sorry nobody has been able to help so far. All I can say is when my dog had leaking glands the smell was really really strong, an awful fishy smell. With hindsight we maybe could have been advised to change his diet as I understand they should empty naturally. Anyway, he was having them emptied so often that eventually he had them removed. The op wasn't nice and the recovery was tough on him but luckily no ill effects. In your case I'd go back to the vet, make sure it is just the glands and nothing else and perhaps ask for diet advise - don't be talked into an op unless there is no alternative.

Did you actually see a Vet to see if the glands were infected ( so required a course of antibiotics) or did you only get a Consultation with a nurse?

My Goldie, Chloe had a run of this a couple of years back. I had to get them emptied 4-5 times over about 3 months, she require ab's just on one occasion when it first started. I began to think it would never end. My vet was more than happy for me to persevere with managing it by diet. Looking back, I suspect I may have given her a bit less bone than usual which probably resulted in softer poo, which can of course mean less pressure to open the ducts.

Grated raw carrot and increasing her raw meaty bones and chicken wings did the trick. I feed some raw, some kibble and occasional tinned meat. She has (touch wood) never needed them to be emptied since. She is now just over 5 years old.

Over a lifetime of dog ownership, she is the first one of mine to have this problem. I too wouldn't rush into an op, my vet would advise it only as a last resort. I hope it clears up naturally for your dog.

The advice we give all our patients with anal gland problems is to add a spoonful of bran to their food! If the problem persists then possibly add a little more!
I agree that seeing the vet would probably be best, just encase there is a slight infection in there!
