Topic Dog Boards / General / Just another (sort of) insurance rant!

My renewal came through at an extra £20 per month now George is 7.  I cannot swap incase of the dreaded pre-existing exclusion but actually this is the cheapest price I can find when I search all the other companies (just for a quick comparison).  I was expecting a hike of around £10 but £20 made me gasp a bit-is this a 'normal' price increase??

I am actually happy it's the cheapest quote I've had and when I entered the information as a new customer the quote was £10 MORE than this one; but also miffed its gone up £20 from his last years premiums. Ah well, you can't please everyone I guess. I'm going to carry on as its still about affordable then see what next years increase is...

When my 2 oldest dogs turned 9 their monthly premiums went up from the mid £30's to the mid £70's, excess went from £75 to £250, and I was to pay 20% of the final bill as well. Despite existing conditions I cancelled, as it stopped being 'insurance' and became pre-payment for a multitude of conditions that they might never have.  I'd rather use a credit card if anything serious happens.

Agree.  At least with tesco it's still a fixed excess of £60 and no % contribution. That would definitely be a decider for me if they ever do change their procedures.  The money would be banked and I too have a credit card I have for emergencies.

It's just tricky as they older they get the more likely they are to need intervention :(

It's such a minefield isn't it :-(  I was going to cancel Remy's last Monday, he has so many exclusions now it was looking utterly pointless!

Ruddy good thing I forgot about it - one of his discs went last week and by some miracle it's actually covered!  Ok, he's got a nasty excess (£99 + 35%) so an MRI is out of the question but with symptoms and history I'm sure that's what it is.  So once I've claimed for the vet visit he had and made absolutely sure they'll pay out, he'll be off to rehab.

But his at least is still only £18 a month, I've been fortunate so far not to have any mega hikes although I've not had Saffi's renewal from Axa for next year yet...

Sit down when you read it..............Zuma  -6 yr GSD- (with claims history! ) went from £364 to £491
I have renewed as he is on lifetime and would have a number of exclusions anywhere else.
i did get a bunch of other quotes but most were lower cover for similar or higher premium and now he is 'older!' some wanted a % of claim as well as the excess!!!

Yeah, I'm dreading it as she has a number of lifetime things going on :-(

This thread fills me with fear!! Nando is a GSD and so I am always worried about Hip Dyplasia. Currently he's with Animal Friends and I've heard such bad things so I am looking elsewhere..

I never ever had a problem with Animal friends, paid out for Merlot without question. I did, as she was 9 yrs old, have to pay the first 35% but with the amount of meds she was on and the cost with her cushings it saved me £££££'s She was with them all her life and the premiums changed very little and were still reasonable till I lost her.
Aileen

PS new pup is with Pet protect and it was the best we could find and seems very competitive.

I have 3 of mine with Animal Friends, after reading on here about how good they are. Never had a problem with them paying out and very helpful unlike the other company I was with.

im with animal friends, I made a claim in the first year for parov, they had no problem paying me the amount I payed over the £69 excess then paying the vet directly the rest of the bill. They were also ok that I didn't ask permission first as apperantly if the bill is going to be over £1000 you ment to let them know first but we didn't know the total cost until after and as it was touch and go at one point I never asked how much it was costing. The just said to write a letter saying what happened and why I didn't inform them of the cost going over the thousand mark and fax it to them and they would accept it. very helpful on the phone too.

I didn't notice an increase in price so if it has gone up it cant be by much at all. Id recommend them to anyone.

I have 4 with animal friends now, apart from the excess once they hit 8 I would recommend them - they have been very good so far.

They do like to generalise their exclusions (e.g. Remy has 'growths, cysts and tumours' excluded because he has fatty lumps from before the policy started), but many companies do.  They've still said his disc should be covered despite excluding all four legs, his hips and all joint pain, I can't argue with that!
