Someone on another group has just taken back a bitch she sold. Bitch is in season, still bleeding but the blood is now pale.

Long story, but the previous owner was boasting he was going to breed from her - one of the reasons she is now back with the original owner, as she is only a year old.

While I know some bitches will acecpt a boy very early in the season, what are the chances she might have been mated? Owner is taking her to the vet Monday but doesn;t know whether to ask for Alizin just in case.

might be worth having her scanned in 4 weeks and if pregnant give alizin then.

As it is it is not normally given until the season has finished.

The only reason for why some vets will not give Alizin until the season has finished, is that they expect the owner to allow the bitch to get mismated again. When I had a mismating on a Saturday, my bitch had Alizin first thing on the Monday -the soonest I could get to the vet without needing to make it out of hours. The earlier it is done, the easier it is for the bitch as there will be nothing to pass (the season will just continue a bit longer), so if I was this person I'd get the Alizin done first thing Monday. It then needs repeating two days later. I'd have thought there is a very big chance she may have been mated.

I'll pass on your advice.

I took Marianne's advice when I had a mismate.  (PM'd her to get some details)  I am so glad that I had the bitch jabbed 2 days later. 

I saw a vet that I hadn't met before, and asked her what experience she had of Alizin.  She said that she had never seen an unsuccessful jab, but had only ever done them early (soon after the mating.)

I have no regrets, and agree that the reason a lot of vets do it later, is because the bitch could potentially be mated again after the jab.  I was not comfortable at the thought of "getting rid" of actual pups.  Done so soon after the mating my bitch didn't show any side effects at all, and I was able to have her spayed 4 months later.

JeanSW, I would think if it is done promptly, it probably prevents implantation....  that being a definition of true pregnancy, when the embryo/s attach to the uterus and begin development. Before that, they have no ability to sustain life.

In fact it should be repeated 24 hours later - ie the next day.
