Took my girl to be mated yesterday on day 12 the mating took place tied for 20mins but the stud dog and my girl only seemed to want to play,
She is not flagging at all but she let him mate her. When we got home she let one boy hump her. Today she is not flagging at all.She is the only one in season, She as been on meds for anal gland infection which as cleared up as been off the meds for over a week now.She seems happy in herself.Will take her to vets for blood test should have taken her last week but with losing jake did not feel up going to vets.

The medication may have made a difference to wether she takes or not??
Putting that aside if it is the right day a litter will occur, not every bitch flags & to coin a phrase used many times...the bitch does not read books!!!

As antibiotics are safe in pregnant bitches I see no reason for them to make any difference.

If mated on day 12, are you going back for another try on day 14?

Hi all well had my girl scanned she is pregnant but not has far has we thought she was. Mated on 7thSept tied for 20mins,it looks like that she did not ovulate till a couple of days later would the sperm still be viable. Vet saw 1but thinks there is more only it is early in pregnancy at about day 24 which we thought she was on day31, having her rescanned in 2 weeks time. Any thoughts am i wishfull thinking that there is more.

Yes it is quite possible that she conceived some time after mating. Semen  from a male with good semen quality will live inside the bitch for 5 days.  In fact one study I read quoted semen to be viable for as long as 11 days in a some cases.

What sperm lives longest male or female sperm.just wondered.

Conclusive research isn't available but it is believed that male sperm swim fast and die young where as female sperm swim slower but hang around longer ....

Someone used one of my stud dogs and the bitch was ok, stood for the mating, good tie.  He only wanted one mating as she previously had 7 puppies to my dog to a day 11 mating, and this time was also day 11.  The owner rang me about 2 weeks later to say he had brought the bitch on day 4, not day 11 (he had been on holiday for two weeks and his dog-sitter had noted down the first day of the season, but put it against the wrong date on the calendar - right day but previous week). 

We couldn't do anything about it so he just assumed she would miss.  But no, she had 6 puppies born 7 days late.  So the sperm must have lived for about a week in the bitch before conception.  Also, the litter was 3 dogs and 3 bitches!

Hi took my girl for a rescan on the22nd only saw 1 but the trainee vet thai did it,he went fast up the horns so said no pups also said no pups under the ribcage so how the hell does What do you all think could there be 1 or2under the ribcage i know wait and see but at the top by her ribcage seems wider.Any adice please.

They thought 1 to begin with didnt they?

They can get different shape even with phantom pregnancy so if nothing is seen in scans it could be a phantom?

SSorry just realised there is 1 pup seen so not a phantom :-)

There is a blood test they can do to determine pregnancy, or you could wait and have her re-scanned later.

I believe she has already been scanned twice (8 oct & this week).

if she was mated 7 sept she would be due 9 Nov, so this is around 2 weeks to go. I think it strange that the second time, the scanner was so fast with his scanning??

When she had her 1st scan the vet said she was not on day31 but day24 he thinks so she must have taken later then i thought so when is her due date.I do too Lexy, i have this feeling that she is carrying more then 1 regardless of the scan.How do you treat a singleton when it is born.

Hi well my girl is on day 55 but she looks big up by her ribcage and looks bigger then if she is only carrying 1, i know it is only a small litter, do they go longer, her last litter come on day 57 which was a big one 7. I have only had big litters & i am worried that she goes to long. Any advice please what to do thank you.

A progesterone test if she goes over should tell you of she should be whelping, and therefore intervention needed.

The in-house premate kits will do the job, so no need to send away bloods and the delay that causes, though fo course you'd need to make sure the vet has them in stock, or give enough time for them to be ordered.

Update my girl her puppy on day 59 last night on her own but sadley it was a stillborn only the 1 it was a lovely pup.I tried everything but she is crying for him looking every were for it what can i do to help her.

So sad.
Clear everything away associated with the pup, delivery etc. Wash away any residual smells if you can.
Get the bitch out and about with fresh air. The temptation to give toys and the like is strong but only slows the bereavement process.
Reduce food and watch for build up of milk in the glands. It will dissipate if you leave it alone.

Watch for any unpleasant smelling discharge to indicate left over material in the womb.

Be positive, these things happen.

so sorry, the same thing happened with my bitch 4 weeks ago except my girl had to have a section, the pup had been dead for more than 12 hours, my girl is just coming back to herself now after 4 weeks, she has been very unsettled and very distressed, she has now started eating properly and fretting for the pup. I feel soo sorry for you and your bitch.
