Summer is a nightmare for dogs eyes! In July one of my bitches had a sore eye and wouldnt open her mouth. We went to the Vet straight away, and he suspected an abcess in her mouth, but she wouldnt let us look. So we had anti-bios and a jab and 2 days later, her eye started to bulge, and we were referred to the Willows. By this time (about 2 hours later) her eye was pushed out and she was in agony. She had a huge cellulitis infection behind her eye, causing it to bulge outwards.
She spent 3 days there, having scans, loads of meds and eye drops etc and they put it down to a foreign body, maybe a grass seed etc. She was very lucky that they managed to save her eye. It was not looking good because it was pushed so far foward, her eyesight was being compromised. She had a contact lense fitted for a while was on anti-bios and drops for a month afterwards.
3 weeks ago after being discharged for the retrobular cellulitis, she ended up back there for 5 days, with a bad case of Uveitis, which came up about an hour after a walk one morning. She had every blood, urine, and poop test, under the sun checking for things from cancer, parasites, bacteria, etc and an abdominal ultrasound, trying to find out what caused it. All came back negative, clear or normal. She has now been on 4 lots of eye drops 15 times a day, 2 lots of anti-bios and pain killers for 2 weeks and so far so good! We are back tomorrow at Willows for another check up! She is alot better thank the lord. But we still dont know what caused it. She will be weaned off the drugs and drops slowly and hopefully we will have no recurrance. Its assumed that she came into contact with something that irritated her eyes.
So motto of the story, any suspected eye problems, get it checked as they can turn nasty very quickly! :)
