I am still struggling with this horrible infection. My Beagle is on Marbocyl for another 2 months and if it has not gone then she will see a specialist. I have never known a bacteria with such immunity to ABs. She has it in her throat which is red raw and she has one tonsil that is like a football.

I know some of you on here have had similar problems with this dreadful infection and wonder why, in this world of wonderful and advanced medicine there is not some drug to kill off this bacteria easier.
Sorry I'm just having a moan as I am so p**d off, it just seems so indestructible and she has had this for so long. Thank goodness she is insured with the cost of the Marbocyl and the vets fees each time she is sedated to take more swabs, only to find out it is still living and strong. Then back to more tablets..and on...and on....

I'd never heard of this until last week when I was told about it by Diane.
I have no advice, just wanted to say it sounds horrendous and frustrating, hope you get a good outcome .

I really feel for you.  Sending positive vibes.  I hope this can be resolved.

Like you said it seems a nightmare to clear, Zuma had p.monas on his nose, 1st time, June 2012, he had marbocyl for 52 days, 2nd time, Nov 2012, caught it very early 'only' needed 24 and 3rd time March 2013, had 34 marbocyl. It was far easier to see on his nose than internally though.
If he gets it again he is noted to go over to AHT, I am lucky that it is only about 30 miles away so virtually on the doorstep. As you said thank goodness for insurance!, total with swabs etc was about £1000, of that most was actual tabs as he was on the 80mg due to his weight -40kg.

more swabs, only to find out it is still living and strong. Then back to more tablets..and on...and on....
Is she still on the tabs after the swab while you wait for result as my vet said it was vital NOT to have ANY breaks in the course of them so after it looked clear he still prescribed tablets until the swab showed clear?

Yes it is non stop tablets. Usually with ABs you see some kind of improvement after a few days, but with this 'nothing' you just hope it is killing the little blighters but there is no sign of improvement at all. She still makes a big gulp sound when she swallows ( swollen tonsils and raw throat) My vet said this is why dogs are wonderful because with all this going on in her throat she still eats and barks like normal ( a bit sexy husky sound ) but if this was a human we would be on drips and liquid food only.
Surely some bright spark somewhere can come up with something quicker than Marbocyl to get rid of this, when you think of all the money put into research etc...sorry another ramble on soapbox starting up...

Have the swabs been cultured for sensitivities?  I'm assuming so but doesn't hurt to check :-)  I spent a few months fighting this with my old dobergirl, she had it in her nail beds and it was an absolute swine to get rid of.  The marbocyl didn't work for her either, IIRC she ended up on metranidozole which did the trick (but don't quote me on that, we're going back a few years!).  It was a long course though, and you must keep treating until a fair whil;e after the symptoms have all gone.

The reason I ask about the culturing is that marbocyl was top of the list for Soli's as I recall - metranidozole was second but it did the better job.  Possibly because we'd tried a couple of short courses of the marbocyl so the pseudomonas had maybe developed some resistance, but that is just theorising on my part.

At home in Sweden when we got dogs with pseudomonas in the tonsills at work (I was a vet nurse) we always had the tonsills removed. I had it done in two of my own dogs and they never had a problem again. And like Nikita said the lab reports showed what antibiotics were most suitable to use.

I'm not sure about sensitivity, I suppose if she doesn't get better then the referral specialist may try alternatives.(I had a GSD on Metronidazole for IBS, it worked really well ) I asked my vet about removing her tonsils and she told me that they really don't like doing this for dogs and will avoid it if at all possible. Again another decision for the specialist me thinks.

The latest fluoroquinolone antibiotic to be developed was launched a couple of years ago. So Marbocyl has been superseded by Veraflox in the opinion of many Vets. Might be worth discussing with your Vet.
http://vetgrad.co.uk/internallink.php?ID=493  In my experience it is cheaper than Marbocyl as well.

Many thanks for this. It mentions various bacteria and infections that it is suitable to use against, but showing my complete ignorance, does this include Pseudomonas ( I am sorry but I don't know what type of bacteria this is ) I will definitely mention this to my vet next week when I go in.
I appreciate the link.

I sent you a PM with more info. I couldn't manage to get the direct link to the relevant pdf onto the thread. Might take you a while to read through it all!

Many thanks I have pm'd you back

I am sure I have read somewhere that Baytril is the only AB that kills Pseudemonas?
- By dogsbody100 Date 04.10.13 09:21 UTC
The brand name Baytril (a fluoroquinilone antibiotic made by Bayer Animal Health) has been on the market for many years. Marbocyl is the second generation improved version of fluoroquinilone antibiotics. Veraflox (Bayer Animal Health ) is the most recent improved development and has been available to Vets for only a couple of years.
