Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bleeding 2 months after season
- By Goldmali Date 02.10.13 12:20 UTC
I've just found blood on the floor and found which bitch was bleeding. She was last in season end of July, so only just over 2 months ago. 3 years old, been regular. CAN she be in season (not heard of a split season having so long in between) or is it a trip to the vet? What else could it be? Pyometra? This bitch always bleeds a LOT during her seasons and it is the same now, but the blood isn't bright or dark, it is almost a bit grey in tone which I'm not entirely happy about -although it isn't all that dissimilar to the very end of a normal season. She's absolutely fine in herself, eating as normal, does not drink a lot at all.

Actually it sounds like it could be pyometra so won't risk anything, will get off to the vet as soon as hubby comes home from work. Drat.

Oh jeez - just seen this - please please keep us posted xxx

It is pyo so Fame is being spayed tomorrow morning.
- By Pedlee Date 02.10.13 16:02 UTC
Can they do nothing else other than spay her?
- By Goldmali Date 02.10.13 19:42 UTC
The vet said we could try alizin (didn't know it could be used for this) and antibiotics if I was desperate to breed from her, but as I am breeding from her litter sister I opted to play safe.

Hope the op goes well tomorrow

Fingers crossed for tomorrow. I would play safe and opt for surgery as well,it's just not worth taking risks.

Hope all goes well tomorrow.
I read an article from the homeopathic vet in dogs today a while ago and he was saying that if you get a closed pyro alizin can be used to make it an open one and give antibiotics if the owner don't want to spay.

So sorry to hear this Marrianne.

I'd do the same as you too.

Hope all goes well tomorrow.   Sounds like you caught it early.

Sorry that you have to have her spayed.  But glad that she is in the hands of someone who acts quickly.  I hope all goes well tomorrow.

Bit more of an update now when I am on an actual computer, was posting from my phone earlier. Fame was bright and lively and acting normal but had the heavy bleeding, which was not the right colour and the more I stared at the spots on the floor, the more it looked like pus. So we called the vet as soon as my husband got home, and were seen instantly. The vet took her temperature and was surprised to find it was high, as Fame was acting so well. He then scanned her and found that her uterus is enlarged, so little doubt about what is going on. It would have been nice to have the OPTION of a litter from her as she is a very nice bitch, and as my vet is very pro good breeders his first suggestion was trying treatment if I really wanted to breed from her, but when I replied that I have an even better litter sister who will be bred from very soon he said in that case his choice would be to spay, to play safe, and both my husband and I agreed -we'd rather know she was going to be well and it was caught early enough to give her an excellent chance of full recovery. So she goes in first thing tomorrow morning to be spayed -there was no need to do it straight away today as it wasn't yet an emergency. Sad but I am so lucky I had more than one bitch from the litter (first time I've been glad I had to keep more than one!!) and that the one I had picked as the best one to breed from -touchwood- is okay! And I can still show Fame of course -lucky as well that she now has plenty of time to get her coat back before Crufts.

Excellent job in spotting the problem Goldmali and I would be doing the same as you are. Wishing Fame a smooth & complete recovery. :-) And thank goodness she has a mum who is on the ball.

Thanks everyone. Fame is a bit tired today (no wonder) but looking really good considering and all went well yesterday. She's on antibiotics and Metacam for a week and goes back for a check up on Monday.

I had two emergencies within the same week (the other a cat) and have spent a small fortune at the vets in that short space of time. So was delighted when the vets called this morning to tell me they have decided to increase my discount on everything to 15 % (before it was 10)!

What a lovely vet you have. :-)

Glad all is well.
