Topic Dog Boards / Health / Advantage V Frontline
- By westie lover [gb] Date 30.01.03 08:31 UTC
Hi, went to the vets today to pick up Frontline and the vet was pushing Advantage. So after listening to her reasons I bought it instead of the usual Frontline or Stronghold. Reading the pack I see that it says that the dogs mustn't get significantly wet -!!!. Living in drizzly Wales, wetness is a daily occurance! I would welcome views of the differences if any effectiveness of them and as I remember you can get Frontlined dogs as wet as you like. Apart from the wetness factor is Advantage as good as Frontline for flea control? Vet said that it was better for ticks - but we dont have a tick problem here. Thanks

They must have changed Advantage then because I don't recall it covering for ticks before, and it certainly didn't stop mine getting them. Frontline covers for mites as well, which came in handy when my two got harvest mites on their feet.

I use Frontline because the Advantage didn't used to cover ticks as well (Last time I looked was in about Feb last year) ..we get lots of tics here , Hudson ended up with one and I changed to Frontline pronto!

My cats and dogs are both on advantage as my vet doesn't sell frontline(is it possible for the vet to be on some kind of commision from company's concerned) The wetness thing with advantage is I believe only for the first twenty-four hours, but could be wrong.

Hi, I've just read the leaflet again and it says" The effacy of the product may be reduced if the animal becomes markedly wet", doesn't mention anything about 24 hours. I am sure the Frontline said something simaliar, but just for the first 24 hours. It doesn't even mention ticks on the Advantage pack so I think the vet may have been mistaken - I didn't see my usual vet - this one just happened to be in reception when I was trying to buy Frontline. Oh well, conned again, its a good job I wasn't trying to treat for ticks!! I think I'll stick to Frontline/Stronghold in future, at least I KNOW they dont wash off.

I live in wet, drizzly and mostly sodden Wales too and I've found the best thing is Frontline, tho I've never tried Advantage, was there a difference in price??? :) I wouldn't be surprised if the Vet was on commission, after all they push the Hills Science diets and various other products including Insurance so there must be some advantage (sorry pun!!) to the Vet, they are a business after all and the main purpose of a business is to make money. You only have to look at the mark up on some of the products and medicines to get an idea of whats going on.

HI, yes the Advantage was a little cheaper if you bought a pack of 4 which I did. The difference was only a pound or two. I think I'll use Frontline or Stronghold next time. The trouble with sprays on my westies is that they have a full coat in winter to keep them warm and I use a size thats supposed to do 5 dogs, but by the time I'm half way through the third its all gone so its gets much more expensive than the drops ons. I'm sure for short coated dogs they'd be good. I dont really want to breathe it in either!!

We used to Frontline our dogs (I used to buy it when we visited France as it is so much cheaper over there) but then the vet suggested Stronghold as this acts as a wormer as well.

I use Frontline mainly because Anna often has to retrieve from water and once Frontline has been on for a short while water does not affect it. I must say, I'm not happy with the spot on's, I prefer the sprays.

add a little garlic powder every day to their diet does wonders with regards fleas.
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 05.02.03 11:35 UTC
Hi Yappy - I had heard that garlic keeps the fleas away. Have you got any more info ? How much to use/how often etc.

I use Frontline on my dogs but I've never felt really happy about putting strong chemical stuff onto their skin.

I'd like to try something gentler as long as it does the job.

Hi Joyce, I use a clove of crushed fresh garlic per dog nearly every day. Have only had to use conventional flea treatments once in 18mths so I think it works :)

Thanks, Christine.

Can you smell the garlic on the dogs ? Not just on their breath but as with humans, through the pores of the skin ? I'm afraid it's one of those smells I just can't stand ! !!:D

Joyce, lost my sense of smell yrs ago so don`t know!!!!!! It`s one of the plus sides to having no smell when dealing with dogs :) :)
Seriously, I have asked a lot of people & they all say no, but I do put it mixed with the other veggies so maybe it gets digested without the smell being released somehow?????

Hi,

My vet tried that so I used Advantage - 3 weeks later I went back to Frontline as Advantage didn't keep the fleas off ! everytime I brushed the dogs I found fleas - never had that problem with Frontline
- By westie lover [gb] Date 06.02.03 08:20 UTC
Yes, I'll get Fronline next time too.
- By gibbsy [gb] Date 22.02.03 16:09 UTC
Beware of using Frontline Spot On. I used it on my Field Spaniel and he was really ill with weeping sores. I now treat for fleas and ticks with drops from my homoeopath in Brecon and have had no problems or fleas and I get lots of wildlife in my garden.

I have used the Frontline spray for about 6 years now, and have never had a problem with administering it every 3 months.

I used the Spot on when coming back from Holland using the Pet Passport Scheme, and one of the girls spent several days scratching, but fortunately no actual skin eruptions.

The Spot on by it's very nature must be more concentrated than the spray which you spray in a mist all over the dog, and it would seem logical that a sensitive dog would react more to the Spot on.
- By westie lover [gb] Date 23.02.03 07:45 UTC
I must have been lucky then, I have Frontlined spot on all my dogs before and have never had any sort of reaction. Westies can have more sensitive skins than some other breeds, but mine have always been ok so far. However its 23 days since I used the Advantage and Jimmy has started scratching again last night. Had a good look and lo and behold - a flea. Frontline has always lasted them at least a full 30 days before, so its definately back to Frontline for mine.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 23.02.03 10:27 UTC
I have been using Frontline spot on for over three years - I only use it every six months and have never had a problem or a flea - touch wood ! I do give garlic every day as well.

Does anyone know of anywhere cheap online to buy frontline?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 28.02.03 21:22 UTC
I wish, bought some online from the USA, then had to apy VAt and postal charges, so worked out nearly as dear as her.

Your best bet is to get domeone who goes to France on Beer runs to get you some, as it is over the counter, and not a prescribed item in Europe.

I beleive a 250ml spray costs around £10, half our price?

When my family go toPoland I get them to get me a years supply at around £8 a bpttle. I have just enough to do the dears In March, and then am clear out!
