Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Approached to mate to produce cross breed
- By LJS Date 21.09.13 07:43 UTC
I have been chatting to a few IWS owners and breeders and it is interesting the incidences of them being approached to use their dog/bitch to mate with another breed for what seems quite obviously to make money.

Responses are obviously on your bike but wondered how many people have been approached as well and what ridiculous crosses were people trying to produce?

POODLES! I have cocker and springer and I get poodles a LOT!  And cockapoo's at stud!?! with No health results at all.  *sighs*
Obviously, they have all been told to get on their bike!  Did you know you can get double the price if you add a bit of poodle? is what they normally say to me.

I have! I have a male westie who is coming up 13 and the amount of times people have asked to use him at stud is ridiculous, despite no health tests on him and his age. The most recent one was 'can I use him on my shih tzu?'. My other dog is an ovcharka who at 10 months old is a very big boy (8 and a half stone of big boy!) and we've had a neighbour ask if she can use him on her malamute bitch?! Imagine the personality, a sledding breed and a flock guarding breed! The poor dog won't know if it's coming or going!

I was pursued recently by a man with an in season Bichon, he was out looking for a mate and my male Cavalier "would do".
I'm usually such a lady :-(

I have Large Munsterlanders a friend of mine in Flat coated Retrievers rang me as a woman with an untested LM bitch had telephoned him. Apparently she had been refused by the owners of LM stud dogs, so she was working her way through owners of Flat coats.
She said she was breeding these dogs for agility, but we have pure bred LM's who are very successful in agility, flyball and obedience so why cross them ?
Think she was just looking to have a litter out of the bitch to make some money, but did not want to fork out for health testing !!
He got as much information about her as he could and then told her where to go !!

I get told my boy would make lovely pups with their bitch (always smaller than mine as I have Leos) and if I would consider it...
I tell them about the risk of using a big dog on smaller bitch(in hope they will at least listen to that if not on the whole why breed crosses) and the fact I only have girls!!

Happens all the time with Pugs, with an amazing assortment of pedigree and cross breed enquiries.  Cavaliers, Jack Russels and Shih Tzu probably the most common.  Dorcas, I have been surprised by the Agility world's assumption that cross breeds are best.  A lady how I have considered to be knowledgeable, sensible and a true dog lover and who has a yorkie and poodle doing agility has just found a small breed puppy for a friend, actually a small cross breed,  Cav x Bischon, as it will be healthier and have a better temperament!

Now don't shoot me down but the Bichon is pretty healthy and using a probably not health tested Cavalier with the potential for heart issue and SM does not make sense at all.

I know a cross like that and it looks like a long caste lemon Cavalier with a peculiar coat.  Very sweet, but certainly no better than either purebred.

I had a woman wanting to put her chinese crested to my boy! The mind boggles!!!

Plenty of enquiries for the usual 'pug cross what evers'... Shih Tzus, Jack russells, westies, beagles, various crosses/oodles etc.
All have the same response, not on your nelly!! (or words to that extent ;) )
