Does any one have any further updates on the Parvo scare after Darlington ?

It is saying that dogs who attended should be kept away from other shows for 30 days .

On a FB forum I belong to there were details - symptoms to watch out for in the F strain which isn't covered by current vaccinations

F strain symptoms to watch for:
Gelatin-like stool with some blood.
Vomiting with bile and foam.
Rapid weight loss (within a few hours after becoming ill.)
Temperature goes up to 106 or 107 degrees (You may or may not see a temperature rise)
Not drinking--acts normal, playing but rests more often--probably not eating
Lethargic--lays around, dehydration continues--at this point the dog will DIE in LESS
than 24 hours unless it is detected in the first stage (not drinking and low grade temperature)

The only medication that helps is SULFAMETHOXAZOLE TRIMETHOPRIM (bactrin)

The posts on that forum said a Giant Schnauzer had been confirmed as having contracted this and also a poodle.

Apparently the vet has confirmed the strain as Parvo CPV-2c. Going by incubation periods, the schnauzer was almost certainly infected without the owner's knowledge before the show, but will have been shedding the virus at the showground if it pooed there. (Remember that parvo isn't airborne.)

There is some concern about whether dogs that were at Darlington and entered for Driffield this weekend should attend.

Working & Pastoral was at Darlington on the Saturday, at Driffield it is tomorrow Thursday so not even a week in between the two shows. At times like these I can appreciate the cat show rules were no exhibitor may enter a show unless it has been 13 clear days in between each show -even if it is not the same animals you are showing.

This is apparently the standard strain that's covered by the normal vaccine.

I have seen a million and one different posts on fb regarding this, its gone from a schnauzer to a poodle to a deerhound and that its this strain that strain a new strain a super strain from USA,  its is hysteria on fb atm. What we really need is some official guidance but they are not forthcoming.

The details of the Giant Schnauzer have been confirmed this afternoon by its owner on FB (Exhibitors Choice and Voice) and there is good information on Parvo Watch (also on FB).

Yes I've seen it confirmed by the owner but there is alot of misinformation on there too.

Part of the FB misinformation is that there has been one of those "warnings" in screenshot form of a new Superstrain of Parvo, this fake warning has bnne doing the rounds for a couple of weeks, and it is a direct lift of one from the USA going back to 2008 and re-occuring frequently, if you google for it.  There don't seem to be any vet comments at all, so it is just a spoof warning.  however as it was saying that the F strain is new and  not vaccine responsive it has caused some panic.  When the first reports of the G. Schnauzer going down with Parvo were made it was said she had "F" strain and the 2 lots of info seemed to get blended.  There are now credible but not yet confirmed reports that a Poodle and Bullmastiff have also been confirmed with Parvo.

Poor dogs, hope they pull threw, know exactly how there owners will be feeling.

We're they young dogs who have only had the puppy set? If so that could be it, maternal antibodies interfering with them.

Don't know the age of any of the Dogs, the Giant Schnauzer's owner is being very open about sharing info, but no details on the others, although reports now say 4 in total.

I saw an update from last weeks show saying nothing has been reported to them and to act as usual - but have seen so many people say that the G'S owner has confirmed it too.

The quote for last weeks show secretary was a case of they had not been told so assumed nothing was wrong, which was a little unwise of the person giving the quote.  The owner of the Schanuzer was obviously devoting time to taking her bitch to and form vets and nursing her, rather than contacting the show society.  There is not doubt about this bitch having the virus, but she is now responding to treatment.  The KC has issued an uninformative and unhelpful statement saying it is up to individual exhibitors to decide if they are in breach of the entry form statement requiring no contact with infectious disease.  It appears that there are many cases of Parvo in and around Doncaster, and the bitch is from one of these villages where there have been other cases.

It would seem that no Gt Schnauzers were present at Driffield today.

There was however boxers which was also in their ring. I hope common sense prevails and anyone with puppies or sick dogs stay home and everyone else take sensible precautions.
