My litter of nine are three weeks old tomorrow, and today I have noticed that a couple of them have quite runny and a touch mucus-y poo's. They have had their first course of wormer (panacur 10% over three days, I also did mum at the same time) finished at the weekend and had no issues with their motions till today. I did let them try some natural yoghurt last night, but can't see that causing a runny bottom. They are all feeding normally and not lethargic in any way. Will be speaking to my vet later this afternoon as i suspect it could be an infection, but in the meantime has anyone else had someting like this happen, I don't remember it happening with our last litter

Is Mum on plain food ? or have you been spicing up her food to get her to eat?
We had a similar problem with pups around this age - and turned out it was all the extra's we were giving Mum coing through in her milk ( she wouldnt eat much so we were adding sardines, baby food tripe - anything to get her to eat)
Mum has some boiled white fish in the morning and a bit of natural yoghurt midday with tripe at night all with kibble to keep her eating as the little suckers love feeding!
I'll try knocking off all the extras and see if that helps. Have just spoken to the vet and he's not too worried, said to not give the pups any dairy products (natural yoghurt) due to the natural lactose which can act as a laxative, so just to keep an eye on them for a day or so and with any luck should settle down, as long as there's not any blood or they stop feeding he's not going to suggest do/give anything, so will keep a very beedy eye on them for the next 24/48 hrs

Hope it works hun - I was a mess when it happened to ours, I was so worried - but all turned out well xxxx
Yes,quite often,
normally i find it starts around the time pups are due to start being weaned as yours are...I did make it worse last time by over doing the bitch on goats milk yoghurt....cut that out and all was well,
You could try some pro kolin paste to firm them up but I would think that when you start them on solids it will settle itself,
Some pups really gorge themselves on mums milk at this age and make themselves loose and I have has mucousy poos a few days after worming as well,
I personally wouldn't jump to the idea of them having an infection....you don't want an over enthusiastic vet shoving antibiotics at them...as long as they are bright and happy and not appearing dehydrated I would give it a day or two,
Ali
Have also notice they've got their first teeth coming through, guess that could also contribute to being a bit unsettled?

You have a nursing bitch that is only given 3 meals a day?
No, she also has several other smaller portions which are just kibble only
I would inclined to blame the yoghurt. I would never give dairy products to any dog as they don't digest it well and too much can cause upsets (a splash of milk or cleaning a yoghurt pot won't hurt an older dog but as a treat only, no as part of their regular diet)
I know a lot of people seem keen on giving raw fed dogs and puppies yoghurt these days but I can't imagine why it became the done thing, and especially for tiny pups I would wean them on raw meat, nothing else for now. (minced or scraped to start with)
I would wait to see if cutting the extras out cures it before seeing the vets, as long as it is not so extreme that they are at risk of de-hydration.
