Topic Dog Boards / General / Vet's Fees poll
- By agilabs Date 21.08.13 22:11 UTC
Hi all
Just want to do a bit of a comparison, :-)

1) What does your vet charge for a regular consult? (ie, in surgery hours, not including any treatment)
2) What do they charge for a repeat consult? (if different)
3) standard booster vax, not counting KC.
4) What area of the country are you in?
Thank you!

I'll start:

1) Consult is £29
2) Not  sure now, used to be a few pounds less
4) think it was about £33 last year, expecting an increase
3) Rural South west
- By Jodi Date 21.08.13 22:18 UTC
I think our charges are roughly the same as yours agilabs and we also live in the rural south west.
- By JeanSW Date 21.08.13 22:58 UTC
Agree with Jodie.  Mine is very similar as far as standard charges go.  But as I have so many dogs, I do get a discount.  And my fav vet often sees a dog without charging.
- By Tadsy Date 22.08.13 09:05 UTC
1) Consult is - I think mines £35 but I rarely get a receipt so not entirely sure
2) I think repeat is about £10 less, however we did get a number free when dealing with the broken leg (current total for that is c£3,700)
3) I take my 2 girls together, and I'm sure it was around £90 for the both. Due to go in October so will update after that.
4) South East (Kent)
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 22.08.13 09:19 UTC
I have recently moved to Worcestershire so will put new and old (Surrey) I travel 28 miles either way to my vets as they don't tut at my raw feeding and have a homeopath who is superb.

First consult £17.50! Was in Surrey £33
Repeat £14 was £22.
Don't vaccinate ( use nosodes so can't comment)

Bet this will be an eye opener of a thread.
- By Roxylola [gb] Date 22.08.13 09:42 UTC
I think a consult is around £25
Repeat in theory decreases starts at £18 and next is £10 I think but they rarely charge me a repeat.  In fact they sometimes don't even charge a consult the first time.
Full booster is £35

In North Manchester.  They are not the cheapest around nor are they the dearest.  They are however the best :D  1 raw feeds, both have horses and are great at being practical and not going down the scans and exploratory surgery type ops unless it is the only option.  They don't sugar soak or blind you with science they tell it just like it is.
- By Goldmali Date 22.08.13 11:02 UTC
Consult about £20, second one I think around £17. Booster about £25. Then I get 10 % discount on everything. Sometimes a vet will waive the consultation fee as well. The other day we took a sick cat to the vet. He got a Synylox injection and 5 days worth of Noroclav tablets. Total cost just over £11. Lincolnshire.
- By Honeymoonbeam [gb] Date 22.08.13 11:05 UTC
In Spain, basic consultation was around EUR25 but my vet rarely charged me that.

Here in Dunmow, Essex I paid £32.50 for first consultation, same for second but then the vet waived the consultation fee as my poor little dog has a mega on-going eye problem (since 26th July) and he is now being referred to an ophthalmologist.  She charges £121 for first visit and £78 for subsequent visits. (and he´s not insured).

I've only recently moved from Hertfordshire, where I thought my Vet was expensive, to rural Norfolk. I now know what expensive is!

My old vets:
1) £28
2) I think it was about £10 less, so around £18. If for a post-op check-up that was free
3) I think it was around £40, but I belonged to their VIP scheme where you paid monthly and that included vaccination, worming, flea treatment and 2 check-ups a year (around £10 pm)
4) North Hertfordshire

My new vets:
1) £40
2) £25 (That's what I've just paid for a post op check)
3) Just over £40
4) North Norfolk

I do think there should be some sort of regulation on the prices vet's charge. It does seem to vary widely in different areas of the country. I also think it should be compulsory to have a vet, or at least nursing staff, in attendance when pets are kept in overnight, but that is another topic.
- By universalady Date 22.08.13 12:13 UTC
1) Consult is £33
2) has always been free for us due to rarely going and have used the practice for years, but i think it is usually £17
4) don't booster, but think it's around £35 - £40
3) Warwickshire
- By sillysue Date 22.08.13 19:14 UTC
I'm with you Pedlee as I am in Norfolk as well. Also £15 for each insurance claim form to be filled in. This latest claim I have had 2 forms filled in, one after the op and then another when things did not clear up as expected so another round of ABs, so £30 off my claim.
- By Pedlee Date 22.08.13 21:31 UTC
Since I've been in Norfolk (Dec 2012) my Vet has had about £4k out of me, most of which wasn't covered by insurance (an emergency 3am c-section [£1500] and then an out of hours prolapsed disc resulting in pts for an uninsured dog [£1300]). I've just paid a bill for £1150 for removal of a swallowed stone, luckily insured.
- By lkj [gb] Date 23.08.13 06:30 UTC
£18.75 plus vat £3.35 = £22.50

This was first consultation for check of 8wk pup.

I know repeat will be cheaper, maybe £19 something.

The next receipt shows cost of vacs, wormer and flea purchase.  Don't know if vets fees were included in this or not as not itemised.  Blooming expensive though!

Just spoke to a boarding kennels and they say that sometimes you can put a deposit at vets for approx. £300 to cover spay, vacs etc.  Don't understand what he was telling me but later today will phone vet and try and see if this is a deal of some sort.

I'm in the south-east area where locals are poor but incomers have money pouring out there 'ears'.

> Since I've been in Norfolk (Dec 2012)

LOL - it is expensive up here - why, I don't know :) I think I paid around £85 to have two dogs boostered last September, although when my oldie needed (negative) tests for excessive drinking last year, I thought the charges were quite reasonable - around £160 in total for several tests, two or three visits to the vet and a couple of quite long phone calls to discuss results. Previous Norfolk vet charged over £400 to remove a small lump from Bramble's eyelid nearly two years ago :(
- By LJS Date 23.08.13 11:40 UTC Edited 23.08.13 11:44 UTC
Initial consult £35
Follow up £25 ( all post op check ups are free with food and pain relief all in)
Vaccinations £47
We are in West Oxon.

I also got a big bouquet of flowers and a card from the practice when we lower Moose so suddenly and did get a bill for that :-)

I think as well we get discounts as we go on mass with all three dogs and three cats for the annual check up and boosters which normally takes a good half am hour plus biscuits !
- By newyork [gb] Date 23.08.13 14:23 UTC
mine is a very good vet. the prices seem to be a lot better than many are quoting too :)
initial consult £22
Follow up £13
Post op check/stitch removal included in cost of op.
Primary vac £35 (dog)
Primary vac £45 (cat)
Booster £20 (dog)
Booster £25 (cat)

South Cheshire area
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.08.13 11:51 UTC
Mine around here are similar to LJS but vaccinations more expensive.

Quoted over £250 locally for Hip scoring, but I travel to Herefordshire to sue an experienced ortho vet, to x-ray under sedation for £150, double that if doing elbows too.
- By Nova Date 25.08.13 12:15 UTC
South Lincs, consult around £24 but often do not charge for follow up checks and never after an op. Can't say I would be very impressed with a vet who recommended homeopathic treatment, there is so much research that says it is total bunkum I would worry about their ability, guess it is just another way of bringing in extra money just like selling dubious food.
- By JeanSW Date 26.08.13 00:01 UTC
Blimey newyork!!  Please can I come and live with you?
- By suejaw Date 26.08.13 12:06 UTC

Me too ! My practice are fantastic. Excellent range of services and good range of specialities amongst the partners and associates. I paid £670 for an Easter Saturday emergency c-section. Just got back with poor Jess from major throat surgery.  Have happily paid out £330 for the op with biopsies and post op support.
Think I pay around £40  for full vaccination course of puppies and consultations are around £35. Very reasonable IMO. Training is same in length as for human docs and we don't have an NHS for pets. Sometimes I wonder how they make a living  !
- By Jan bending Date 02.09.13 17:17 UTC
And Jess op was an emergency.
- By Jan bending Date 02.09.13 20:17 UTC
And she isn't insured.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 18.09.13 11:35 UTC
