Topic Dog Boards / General / Should I buy puppy from dam with difficult birth issues?
- By Dungonnell [gb] Date 30.08.13 14:20 UTC
Hi
Just looking for advice.
I contacted a breeder of a litter that was advertised and I spoke on the phone and asked how many litters the dam had in its life. He said 2. The first only produced one pup that was too big to deliver and unfortunately lost the pup. The 2nd litter the mother had 5 pups, 3 born one day then a delay before last two born the following day. Although the pups for sale look healthy I am a bit wary.
Am I right to walk away?
Thanks

No need to be wary at all unless you are looking for a bitch to breed from, then maybe I'd think twice and get some more detailed information, but even then nothing you've said rings any major warning bells. (Other than the fact the breeder doesn't seem to have gone to the vet when there was a long delay in pups being born -or did they?)

I don't know if he did go to the vet when he discovered the delay. TBH I also thought a bit strange was when he found out his dam was pregnant, rather than go to vets for a scan he went to a friends farm to have her scanned. I'm assuming to save vet bills I guess?
I think I'm doing the right thing as i don't feel comfortable with it.

Lot of breeders use people who scan sheep as often they are more skilled at scanning than some vets so probably not just cost cutting why they did that opposed to going to vets - also,  sick dogs go to vets so not ideal place for possibly pregnant dog... and if sheep scanner does better job with less money... I know where I would go with my girl!
I can't see any reason why you should walk away except perhaps that you do not seem to feel comfortable with the breeder.

I didn't actually feel there was a problem going to a farm to use a scanner as I am from a farming background and can't see why it would be detrimental to the pregnant dog.
I suppose I've got carried away with being overly cautious. It will be my first cocker spaniel so I want to make sure it's all good.
I feel a bit better about it now :)

Is this the same breeder who is feeding the puppies weetabix and rice?

Are they working type or show type cocker spaniels? The two are very different.

And remember to ask about the health tests that both sire and dam should have had (eye certificates etc).
