Topic Dog Boards / Health / seeping c section wound...antibiotics given
- By miss-brazil [gb] Date 21.08.13 19:16 UTC
Hiya guys..
Willy my dog(biatch) had a c section on the 10th of july.shes had 2 lots of antibiotics but her wound is seeping puss(sorry).I have been cleaning it with salt water then cleaning it with plain cooled down boiled water then drying it.I dont want her puppies to injest any salt water hence why I am being thorough.
I have applied sudocream a couple of times but I dont really like doing this as i have to clean it for a lot longer so the puppies to swallow any whilst feeding(they are not with mum all the time),she only feeds them as she isnt very attentive.
I'm just worried for willy as I dont want her to be sore...she doesnt seem sore to the touch but I just wondered if there is any kind of powder to put on it to dry it up that wont harm her pups.??
I remember a powder you used to get when you had a child to put on the belly button?stirzac or zirtac...I cant remember now...
Any suggestions please??am sure someone else has had this problem!!

help please

have you taken her back to the vet? what does he advise?

yes been there everyday this week...she says to keep doing what I'm doing but I was wondering if anyone had any other advice.?
It just seems the more I clean it the more I seem to be stopping it healing.
when I had my c section I used talc on it to dry it up but I'm not sure if you can do this with a feeding dam??
I dont want to cause her harm or the pups!!

If it was my bitch I would be unhappy about messing my bitch about this often.  Antibiotics should have worked by now.  I would have expected it all to be healed by now.  Try a different vet at the surgery.

Is she still on the antibiotics? if not (and if she has been on them for several days without improvement) then def go back to your vets.

as far as healing goes, how about Manuka honey? supposed to be great for healing and I assume pretty harmless to pups. I wouldn't want to be poking the wound too much, that will hinder healing,  rather than keep cleaning off the ointment before the pups feed could you cover lightly with a non-adhesive dressing and hold it in place by running a bandage round her body, or maybe make a kind of body sock out of an old shirt? just while the pups are there, leave it open to the air as much as you can.

thankyou...yes she was given a new course of antibiotics...she was fine to begin with then it got some blister like things on it so we went back to the vets...
I have been using some plain cotton like guards/dressings and holding them in place when they feed mainly to protect wilma from being hurt...but a sock kinda guard sounds really good .I'll have a go at making one later...going to get some manuka honey also...
We have seen 4 vets in total and all have said the same thing...more antibiotics...
I think I'm going to leave the wound alone and clean round it its probably my fault its not healing...
All I have done is panic like some kind of deranged new mother...every different sound the puppies make I'm having a doo....If willy wont eat I'm having a doo...if she hasnt pooped I'm having a doo...if the pups dont poo am having a doo....
My nerves are shot to bits....fingers crossed willy starts to heal and we all start to feel better...and the puppies survive....

thankyou

Aloe Vera gel will soothe and won't be harmful if licked by the pups.

I had a bitch years ago that wouldnt heal up after a routine spay.she was eventually found to be allergic to the sutures ,so she had to have another op where they were removed & another type put in.
Everything went well after that so you never know ,your girl may have the same sort of problem

> eventually found to be allergic to the sutures .

I would start thinking about this, this far after the original op.

I've experienced this with two different dogs and I've heard it from other people too.  It's certainly something I'd be asking the vet about in this case
