my 10 year old golden retriever got pregnant and gave birth to 6 puppies, i knew that she didnt have a healthy pregnancy. all the puppies passed away except for one puppy who is one month old and weighs 1.8 pound. the dam didnt produce milk anymore and the puppy became weak.
i brought her to the vet and the vet said since she is not getting any milk from her mother might as well give her s starter mousse a high protein puppy food. i also found out that she has worms and has been in ongoing treatment for it. now im worried that she will not thrive and that she will be smaller than a normal golden retriever. i am worried that she will not catch up with her normal weight and will not grow just like other dog of her bread. i am a beginner in raising a puppy myself please help me...

i hope the pup is still with mother at this age

Is this a pup you have bought or one that is from a litter you have bred which is smaller than the litter mates?
I hope it isn't the first option as a puppy should be with its dam and litter mates till at least 8 weeks old as they don't start weaning from the dams milk till 3 weeks old and she and the other pups teach doggie etiquette and humans start socialising in the remaining weeks.
Second option a pup can be smaller initially but soon picks up when solid food is given and can end up the biggest in the litter.
Take the pup to the vets and get it checked over.

thank you for commenting, the damn doesnt have any milk anymore she already 10 years old. i brought the puppy to the vet and she suggested that its ok to feed her puppy food since she is not getting any milk from her mother anymore. i found out she has worms and is on going treatment for it. im just worried that she will not grow like a normal golden retriever since she is only 1.8 pounds and shes already 1 month old. by the way all the other litter passed away. :(

Maybe they don't have a limit on age of breeding bitches in the Philipines or the breeder was continuing for the money.
Having worms will interfere with weight gain, dam or pup not wormed and pup sold on as soon as possible, would it have any teeth at that age? My first litter the vet commented at 9 weeks that the bigger of the 2 bitches had less teeth than the other 2 pups but had caught up by 12 weeks old.
Yes, it's terrible, but we have a one month pup here suffering (let alone the dam) so let's help if we can.........
All pups whether they have worms or not, should be given worming treatment some use panacur, some drontal which needs to be given regularly so hopefully you are on that regime right now from your vet and you will follow the advice given, it is very important to worm all pups as worms will kill.
Secondly yes, in circumstances like this weaning can be done early, but, go out and get some pasturised goats milk, make up a cup full and warm, (luke warm) with an egg yolk this you should give to your pup morning and evening either in a bowl to lap up (which will be very messy as pups generally like to put their feet and face in everything or by using a syringe (without needle) orally in the mouth and giving a little at a time throughout the day, this will help to plump up your pup and give much needed goodness.
Along with the starter mousse puppy food/dry soaked complete puppy food, you are giving, also give scrambled egg (made with goats milk) as a starter food, progress over the next week to cooked rice with chicken/mince meat/white fish all to help build this pup up and give it a good range of food. Your pup needs 5 small meals a day as the tummy is very small so can only take so much food/milk at a time.
Never, ever breed from the dam ever again and if you do not have her spayed or there is another accident she can have an injection to terminate the pregnancy immediately which really is what should have been done a 10 year old whelping is very much frowned upon in this country she is an old lady.......
I hope that the pup makes it, take very good care of the dam and the pup, make sure both are fed well with good quality foods.

Excellent post carrington. It wouldnt hurt the Dam to be having the same feeding as the pup too if she's in a bad way (IMO)

Excellent advice given above :-)
Do you know who the father is? Is he also a golden retreiver, or an unknown dog?
If you don't know who the father is, your pup may not grow to be as big as mum. She will still need feeding several'small meeals a day - at least 6.
I do hope you are going to keep this pup, get both her and mum speyed, and not try to make money out of her.

excellent posts from knowledgeable people lets hope op is able to follow the advice given including speying for the future

thank you so much for the advices everyone especially carrington. its my first time to take care of dogs myself. yes i will definitely follow your advices. the dam is my cousin's dog which unfortunately had been sick for a long time. i decided to take over to help
him take care of the dam and the puppy. Im sorry but its not his fault and his intention to breed his dog yes its an accident. as far as i know the sire is also a golden retriver of his neighbor. i will do my best to save both of them.
Very Sorry n3yj for doubting your post. I hope the puppy gets well . You have had excellent advice from members of this forum ( except me ! )
We have an expression in this country which we use when we are embarrassed by something we say or do and I have 'egg all over my face' at this moment and am eating 'buckets of humble pie '
Best Wishes

I have a gundog pup slightly older at the same size. We started her on the puppy pate at 4 weeks but she still has access to mum. We have our good and bad days but she's 7 weeks tomorrow.
