A blue Merle is basically a grey(called Blue in collies)& white dog that has patches of black in the gray & sometimes tan(vrown)markings were the grey meets the white
They can have blue or wall eyes as well

there are 3 colours of rough collies shetland sheepdogs smooth collies and border collies sable and white tri colour which is black and white and tan the blue is bluish grey white and tan markings very evenly marked with black they came from experimentation between the white collie and the tricolour and now its strictly between tri and blue merle meaning marbled get on to a collie web and view those gorgeous dogs mari

hello gillian .of course you are right about the many different colours of the border collie ijudged them at the bray champ show last year iwas just giving an example of a few breeds that were blue merles mari

tri coluors can be merle(the merle with tan marking), red tan & white, black white & tan, Blue tan & white, Tan, fawn & white etc etc etc
There are also tri colour & blue merle Bearded collie The merles are only now seen is working Bearded collies & yes they do exist as I tried to buy a young dog from a shepherd in Scotland but he wouldn't sell the dog
