Topic Dog Boards / General / Microchipping-Is there a way to keep

I have a question and not sure if anyone knows if it is possible to have dogs/pups
chipped and have details of breeder kept on record even when the dogs/pups go off to live
with new owners?

I know Rescue's obviously have their own details kept on each of their own dogs that they rehome but wondered
if this option was open to breeders yet?

You could just get them done with your own name and details as new owners might not change the ownership details anyway or put your details under features or in case of emergency contact.

There is a space for breeder's details on the Perlog registration forms, however there is nowhere to record the details on the authorized users imput screens. The only way to keep a dog in your name is to keep the chip details when the dog is sold. This may/may not change after 2016-who knows.

If the new owner transfers the ownership & opts for the premium registration it is possible to amend some details on the registration on petlog

This is too reliant on what new owner does, it is one of the reasons why I prefer the tattoo register http://www.dog-register.co.uk/ as the breeder stays on record permanently and is contacted if owner cannot be.

I understand for those who are chippers they can do dual registration with some registries, but this doesn't help those who don't do their own chipping.

From a responsible breeders point of view it is a major flaw in the chip registering system.

I can see your point of view - but, once sold, a breeder has no rights over the dog so there is no requirement for the 'previous' owner info to be kept :( I can't see anyway that the law would require this info to be held, so it's down to the breeder to try to sell responsibly (which most on here do :) ) and do as you do and tattoo as well :) Of course, it would be very useful if the new laws required all breeders of dogs to be responsible ultimately for their puppies, but this has all to be taken in the context of dogs being treated in the same way as a car/piece of furniture etc :(

I'm not sure how this actually works under the law ?? Does it only apply once the normal seven day period of holding a 'stray' ends ??

Not sure as it would be whoever is holding the dog that would contact the registry.

If it's the council I am sure they are more than happy to have someone take responsibility for the dog.

If you have chips registered with Petlog, then yes it is possible to have breeder details kept on record. I chip my pups before they leave me. I notify Petlog of the chip numbers, they register them to me as the breeder, then once I have chip numbers tied up to owner details I enter the information on the Petlog database. By putting my details as breeder against the microchip numbers I'm showing I'm responsible for producing the pups, but if all else fails, should the pup become parted from owners at some later point, I am an additional point of contact. I'm not sure, but think other databases have a similar breeder ability. Sadly at the moment, there is no facility to input breeder information when entering microchip details onto the database, though I understood Petlog had planned to have this in place by now :( However, a quick phone call or e-mail is all that is needed :D

That only seems to apply if your the chipper, not when you get someone else to chip your pups.

It all seems to fall flat once the new owner takes control of updating the chip details.

It's why I tattoo, and encourage new owners to adopt a belt and braces approach and get pup chipped themselves when getting vaccinated.

I do get pups tattooed, just wondering with the new legislation if it would be possible to keep breeder
info on re microchip as well if you get the litter done at the same time etc.
