Topic Dog Boards / Health / my pup has swallowed a tissue
- By lkj [gb] Date 11.08.13 09:15 UTC
help please.  my pup has swallowed a whole 2ply supermarket tissue. in mouth, one gulp and gone. would you be able to advise and has anything like this happened to you?  if I hadn't seen her I wouldn't know any different.

Depending on what size(breed/age) your pup is as to wether you need to be very concerned or just keep an eye on her?? Hopefully she will pass it with out too much trouble but at least you know to check her motions, for the next day or so.

I am surprised that a pup could swallow a tissue in one gulp - big pup?   - mine often seems to get hold of and shred tissues.  He chews bits but doesn't seem to eat a lot - I usually follow him around picking up the bits.  You may find he vomits the whole lot up again if it is uncomfortable - I am no expert but I don't think a tissue can do much harm - hopefully someone else more experienced will come along and give you some advice.  I would say that if he/she continues to eat and drink normally then just watch the other end.

My pup, large breed, seems to be eating all sorts although hasn't got at a tissue yet. Her usual fare is various plants, moss, cardboard, a butterfly and an attempt on a wasp. So far anything that has actually gone down seems not to be causing any problems as she mainly shreds things rather then eat them. Tissue does break down pretty well in damp conditions, but other have said, depends on the size of pup as to how big a problem it will cause her.

As said what size if your pup?

My girl is classed as a medium breed and as a pup (and still now at all most 2)  has swallowed parts of toys, whole tissues, bits of wood, sticks and her fav whole wet whipes. All passed threw (well the stick did get stuck at the last moment and was left poking out but pulled it out no problem) my vet gave me a big bottle of liquid parifin to give her if she swallows things to help her pass it. So far the only thing that didn't pass and was thrown up was a pad from her bitch pants she has when in season, didn't know she had eaten it untill it came back up.

my dog (18mth) ate a wet wipe when she was younger and we never even knew till she vomited it up, that said we did notice the day before she became unwell, didn't eat and had to feed her ice cubes because she wouldn't even drink which concerned us even more, we were going to take her to vet that day but she was sick and brought the wipe up, within an hr or 2 of doing this she was back to herself so, i'd keep an eye for it, like others have said it could come out either end! good luck

Thank you all for replying and taking an interest.   She is a 4 month medium sized collie.  Like Jodi's dog she eats all vegetation.  She has never had anything she could shred, up until now.   She had the tissue in her mouth, saw other food on offer and just swallowed.  She has been eating and pooing. All I can do is watch for any difference in her.
Jo mentioned the stick her dog swallowed.  I had an alsation that ate an ice lolly and stick. That passed through until the last moment but no trouble.

Our 14 year old Labrador has eaten (stolen!!) all manner of things from wipes to tissues and even foil cake cases and the tops of cat food pouches, and so far they've all come through fine. My friends golden retriever used to steal tissues and eat bits of them all his life too and never had a problem, so I would just keep an eye on her!

By now she should have passed it, you may be able to see in her motion...you certainly can with vetbed....

Hi Lexy, I think she has passed it and I missed it.  If this was a text I would print lol.  She went to toilet and unusually for her a piece was softer.  Normally a bit like that would stick to the grass but it picked up easily.  That must have been the whole tissue crumpled up and discoloured (lol).  My husband did say he would search through the dustbin so I could examine it but I've declined.

To be fair an ordinary tissue (sot paper) is nto going to cause an issue, and disintegrate, on the other hand wet wipes are different and likely to come through whole.
