Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Poodle exhibitors - basic grooming kit
- By Beenz [gb] Date 08.08.13 20:24 UTC
I hope there are some Poodle exhibitors on here that can help me out. Friends have inherited a Toy Poodle and are looking for a basic grooming kit, the essentials. They are new to the breed, they have always had Springers and have no idea what type of brush etc to get. They were asking me as they know I groom my own dogs but my breed is very far removed from Poodles. I promised I would try and find out for them. They won't be showing the dog so just need a simple maintenance kit.

Thanks in advance
Beenz

Im presuming that it will be in pet trim, so a slicker brush (Doggyman I use), a comb and ear plucking powder are basics.

I have just bought a Greyhound comb from Peasridge for £6.60 which I love, and delivery is free under £10. It also arrived next day, which is great.
They should also get Thornit powder. I use it as a plucking powder and also to soothe the ears if they ever get itchy. Mine is from Miss. P. Bett in Norfolk - a little pot lasts forever ! I pluck mine once a week.
I then use ear wipes to get the Thornit residue out between plucking.
Toy breeds seem to be known for bad teeth so a toothbrush and toothpaste might be an idea.
And choosing a groomer ASAP as it is best to get an appointment arranged early as they have appointments booked around 6 weeks in advance.

Slicker brush, wide tooth comb, ear forceps ideally. And make sure the breeder or groomer shows them how to brush or comb the coat properly - even in a lamb trim it can get pretty tangled over the 6 weeks between appointments!

For simple grooming...
I would recommend a soft slicker brush, often called a cocker slicker,
A pin brush for the ears and tail furnishings.
Two combs,a greyhound comb and a very fine comb to fluff up the coat ..
Boric eye solution and cotton pads for eye wipes
Thornit ear powder.
Nail clippers  and kwik stop..
This is a good site ..
www.ridgeway poodles.    Go to grooming section.
For clipping and scissoring the whole story gets more demanding...little steps grasshopper.good luck!
