Topic Dog Boards / General / Good disinfectant for patio?
- By ellerslie83 [gb] Date 08.08.13 15:51 UTC
Our elderly lab has taken to weeing as soon as he gets out of the door in the morning - meaning he goes in the corridor alongside the house that leads to the main garden area - consequently, as soon as you open the back door, it smells like a urinal!!!

I have hosed it, but it still smells, and we've got a puppy coming in about a month, so will want to keep things clean and not smelling like a toilet!

Anyone know any good safe products that would kill the smell and the germs?

We have tiled floors throughout the house and have a tiled terrazzo outside.  i use lysoform disinfectant indoors and out. We have two 20 plus kilo dogs and this really helps keep the area smelling sweet. At night I throw a strong disinfectant down and let it sit all night ,especially  in the favorite wee zones....then I hose with water in the morning so the dogs don't get affected by the chemicals.

This is a topic that comes up fairly often on this forum - particularly in warm weather!  There's a bunch of good replies in this thread here which also contains links to other discussions :)

As mentioned in the thread linked to, Mistral. I particularly like the bubblegum and the vanilla scents. :) I use it for everything, from cleaning the cat litter trays to washing my floors as well as outdoors.

Another vote for Mistral odour fresh here too! I use the premium one.

I've tried various methods to keep our patio smell free, the best I've found is to keep a bucket of ready made bio washing powder/liquid and wash the area down as soon as they've "been".

My patio is constantly wet but smells like fresh washing!

Just tagging onto the end here...what would work with dirt and gravel areas? I have a yard and the dogs prefer to go there...it is dirt underneath and gravel on top and it is stinking...I have hosed and then the rain I would have thought it wouldn't be so smelly...it wouldn't be cost effective really to use commercial products....but I need to do something...

Cheers

Probably the diluted biological washing powder/liquid. It doesn't disinfect, but will kill the smell and supermarket Value versions are cheap as chips.

I'm enjoying my Mistral (or whatever, mine seems to be called CSI...lol). Leaning towards Lavender (which does not smell of old ladies or cheap air freshener as I thought it might), Lemon, Cherry and Ocean Breeze. Wait... that means I like ALL the 4 flavours I bought in my mixed batch! :)

I too use mistral, currently lavender but also love bubblegum. I water the dogs area which is gravel over soil with a permable membrance inbetween with it reguarly and it seems to work but if its just the smell you need to get rid off I agree with the bio washing b powder great stuff for allsorts

I will have to visit someone that uses the bubblegum smell and have a good sniff. As it stands I can't imagine a scent I'd least like!

Zoflora, you can get large containers (500ml) on-line, Amazon etc.  It's concentrated and diluted makes up full strength disinfectant.

I was given some Zoflora bottles at a recent cat show and WOW, it really does smell like flowers and is so nice! So I'm using that as well at the moment. It's very easy to get hold of but does work out more expensive than Mistral.

BTW I cannot stand lavender smell myself so always avoid that. :) Got the bubblegum not thinking I'd like it, but both hubby and I really do.

Edited to say: Even with 500 ml bottles of Zoflora, Mistral comes in 5 litres and you dilute it much the same.

Ah but the 500ml bottles make up 4 5litre bottles of full strength disinfectant that I then splash into a bucket of water.

Thanks for everyone's replies! That's given me lots of options to research, and I'm excited there's so many with nice scents! :)
