Hey everyone, would like some help for my sister who has a 12 week old labrador puppy. As you all are a very helpful bunch. Right after the socialisation period is over for a puppy. How many times a day would she need to take him out etc ? Also would she still need to pick carry him? Because they say puppy doesn't need much walk. So how can she take him out if he starts getting heavy? Without over walking him? Bit confused because they say don't walk them much until a year or so. Would be nice to get some answers please!

The advice is that the puppy has 5 minutes of formal walking per month of life so a 3 month pup 15 minutes up to twice a day.

It is easy enough to walk a puppy five minutes from home or car, and then sit and watch the world go by, so can be out much longer meet people see traffic etc.

At 4 months 20 minutes 6 months 30 minutes, 9 months 45 minutes and hour at a year and so on.

Also of course pup can be taken out in the car, or if you don't drive on the bus etc (did that a lot for the first 15 years of dog ownership).

My response is in no way directed at your sister  but it still amazes me how often questions like this are asked.  WHy don't the breeders give them the information or at least discuss it during a visit.  Hopefully not a Champdog breeder.

A tip if she is having to carry a heavy pup. I have a baby sling the kind that goes on over your shoulder a bit like an arm sling absoultly brilliant for heavy pups. I have gsd and he was carried for ages like that

mines gone through 4 pups from chihuahua to gsd and four children and still going strong for next pup :)
