Hi all.

My bitch has just had a scan and has confirmed she is in whelp.

I was just wondering what everyone does when it comes to there food? What do you think is best?

My mentor puts them on puppy food at 6 weeks.

The sires owner leaves her dogs on what they normally have.

The scanner I used puts hers on puppy food at 4 weeks.

The book of the bitch states to increase normal food during second half of pregnancy.

My bitch has starting being sick at meal times so I started to introduce 2 smaller meals a day. She is on day 31.

My regular food is a mix of, fishmongers grain free, laughing dog grain free, wainwrights gain free, raw green tripe mince and raw chicken carcasses.

Thanks

The reason puppy food is given is that you can give smaller amounts at each meal and still get the nutrients they need because as the pups grow there is less room for the stomach.

I used RC reproduction starter from 6 weeks, she stays on that till she is back in condition, the pups are weaned on to it and stay on it till 8 weeks old when they go onto normal puppy kibble.

I've told the story on here before: put one of my pregnant bitches on puppy food, and it caused such terrible diarrhoea it just would not stop. Then the pups were born and eating afterbirth etc caused even more diarrhoea, she almost died and lost about 50 % of her body weight. In the end all that worked was feeding her chicken wings about 6 times a day and nothing else, that stopped the diarrhoea and the weight started to come back. Since then I will never consider puppy food again, it's just too rich for some bitches. I now simply use the normal food but give extra meals. The same bitch was fine with her second litter when she did not get any puppy food.
