My dog has developed a cough today, initially i wasn't concerned as not out the ordinary for him to cough, but it's lasted all day, not constant though, sounds like he's trying to hack something up but to no avail. Looked at videos on youtube sounds very similar but not as croup like, but don't know how long those dogs have had it. Also have a symptom free puppy. Not sure if a trip to vets is necessary?

If this is Kennel Cough your puppy is not going to be symptom free for very long.

Last year when someone kindly visited me without telling me her bitch was getting over KC, my own dogs went down like flies.  4 dogs one day, 6 dogs the next, 3 the next etc.  It was a nightmare.

I would also want to be sure that a vet listened to the heart.

Thanks, did symptoms come on really quick with your dogs? He was fine early in day then started coughing, hasn't done for a few hrs now, does it start off like this? Really hoping it's not kennel cough :(

Once mine started coughing, it got gradually worse.  To the extent that they were almost making themselves sick.  My vet asked me to watch the really tiny Chi's, as it could really get serious.  Yet I found some of the smallest had less severe attacks than my Bearded Collies.  Some of the dogs were really poorly.  We were in quarantine for weeks.

My new rescue had a cough that I assumed was kennel cough and it turned out to be lung worm which can often be mistaken for KC as it sound similar. Best to have a vet check. In my case I couldn't understand why non of the others showed any symptoms, the reason became clear once the diagnosis had been made.

Will take him in he was wormed 2 weeks ago, will normal wormer's not work on lung worm?

DON'T take him into the waiting room!!!,    wait till you are called, tell the vet suspected kennel cough and either vet will look at dog in car or take you straight through.

He's been was seen in the car & given a course of antibiotics, apparently lots of cases locally. Puppy going later today for vaccination against  it. Hoping that's the end of it

Thanks :) no coughs today, so may not have been kc?? he did go swimming in the sea @ the weekend so maybe caught a cold from that, but pleased he's on the mend from whatever it was and also now have peace of mind the little one will be safe from it too.Just don't understand why vets don't encourage having vaccination with puppy inoculations & boosters :/

Like the human cold KC is caused by very many different organisms.  The one they vaccinate for is Bronciceptica one that is quite nasty.

The only times any of mine have had KC over the last 25 years (three times) it has been so mild in some cases most people might not notice it, as ti was just throat clearing when excited/first thing, and no treatment other than keeping dogs home was needed.

Interestingly I have never had all the dogs go down with it and if ones alive during last outbreak were still with us, they didn't get it again (so assume it must have been same version, to which they had become immune).

If the frequency mine have had it is anything to go by then vaccinating against something do rarely needed would seem unnecessary, especially as it only covers one disease causing agent..
