Topic Dog Boards / General / Un-vaccinated dogs and holidays
- By HAMISH75 [gb] Date 26.07.13 15:26 UTC
Hi All

I know some of you on here don't vaccinate your dogs and i just wondered what you guys do when you go  on holidays? I have been offered a holiday in late September and am looking at what i can do with Robbie, as you all know i don't vaccinate him due to his skin disease as every time he has been vaccinated his skin erupts so badly he suffers for months until it settles back down, even the vet has now suggested its not a good idea as he saw how bad he was last time, i am just wondering as he isn't vaccinated will kennels take him or even a pet sitter? Its not a case i can take him with me on holiday so i need to find somewhere that will take him and just thought i would ask you guys as you would all know the procedure for dogs that don't have vaccines?

Thanks in advance
Helen

Holidays what are those. Last one was honeymoon in 2009.

Seriously we rarely go away, except with dogs and then the toehr stays at hoem with the others.

We have always had someone look after them at home (family member or doggy friends) or traded boarding with a doggy friend when we only had one or two.

I can beat you there Barbara.  Last holiday was 1992, a trip to Australia to see my dad!

I don't have my dog vaccinated so any holidays I take always include him. I was going to say it's just one of the prices you pay for the decisions you take but the fact is I wouldn't enjoy a holiday without my little pal.

I'm wondering about this too.  Oban has allergies and his Vet says not to vaccinate, which was my idea and he just agrees.  But I have an ill family member, well it's my Mum, and I wonder what's down the line when I am busy and distraught for a week or so.

Helen, did you ever vaccinate Robbie?  Could you titre to see if he is still protected?  Then it would be a case of finding a boarding facility that would accept the titres.  I think I will look into this for us.

Has he been titre tested?  I have found kennels that will accept titres.  You just have to do a lot of ringing around and be willing to travel a bit!  I wasn't prepared to compromise on what I wanted from a kennel either, but I still managed it and mine were kennelled for 3 days :-o in March - 3 of them were only 'covered' by titre tests.

Have a look for pet sitters and home boarders as well.
Some will stay in your house and look after your dogs while you are away. Ask around at dog clubs etc. and I am sure you will come across people who know people who home board.

Ah but I missed out on that the first time around so this time hardly had a wedding, (registry office no reception, though got taken to Cosmo's by Dad and his wife) but got the honeymoon this time.

I met up recently with the lady who will be home boarding our two while we attend a friends wedding and then again for our own wedding later in the year. I took along documentation and proof of vaccination etc but she didnt ask to see it and there was no mention of taking it when we drop the dogs off.
Perhaps its down to the individual if they will take your un vaccinated dog or not?

Hi

Yes Robbie was vaccinated from a puppy and then had 2 boosters in the next years but each time he was boostered his skin broke out so badly that i felt it wasn't fair to him to suffer like this and in the end the vet agreed after i discussed it must have been the vaccine as his skin wasn't bad at the time, never thought about what happens if you want to take a holiday and kenneling him or even a pet sitter, tough decision as its not always possible to take them with you on holidays.
Would appreciate if you can find anything out about this and if you do let me know

Thanks again

> Honeymoon, what are those

I had a honeymoon 32 years ago - installing a new toilet in my in-laws house - stayed two nights (they were staying in our house after the wedding) - came home - went back to work.

Bramble won't be vaccinated again now he is 15, so we won't have any holidays, probably until after both he and Tara have gone, as she is now 11.

Hamish75 where are you based?  Does your sitter need to be local to you or an airport/hotel etc?

I have a dog experienced friend who is just about to get herself set up for home boarding.  She is v aware of the issues with itchy/allergic dogs as she sometimes looks after mine.

The dates might not work however but feel free to PM me your requirements if you wish and I can pass the info on.

She is in Somerset...

> Last holiday was 1992,

I think that I win on this one.  I had my first holiday in 1976.  In Bournemouth.

Then I had a bit of a break.  Went to Devon in September 2003.

Since then I have been on caravan holidays in North Somerset.  Where I can take the dogs.  But I have too many for them to all fit in the caravan, so dog sitter sleeps at my place.

I know someone who would house sit for you (assuming they're not already booked) PM me if you're interested.
