I took my maiden bitch 300 miles round trip to a stud in january, miss mating ocurred so we decided to leave the bitch with the kennel to see if a tie would take place the following day so I paid my over the top stud fee and left her there. I received a photograph of two dogs tied but was so close up all i saw was the tops of two dogs backs could have been any dog to be honest. We collected her another 300 mile trip and waited to get the pregnancy confirmed by a scan at the vets. This was done and showed no pregnancy. i waited until 63 days just in case she had one or two pups that may have been missed by the vet but he was correct and no puppies this time. i then contacted the owner of the stud and explained no puppies. She agreed that we could try again with her next season I hadnt planned a litter in the summer for this bitch but i had another bitch her mother that i would be breeding from a very experienced dam, so we waited for her to come into season and took her down to this stud (another long trip). My bitch was raring to go but the same stud mis mated again then seemed to think that his job had been done and left a puddle on the floor. She suggested we went away for an hour and to return again to see if we could try again, this time he was even worse and wasn't playing ball at all. The owner suggested we left the bitch again which i refused because it took us 5 hours to get there and 5 hours to get back it just wasnt an option. The stud owner offered another dog which was a PRA Carrier (no good as the bitch is also a carrier of PRA) or a younger do that had elbow scores of 2 which wasn't any good either. I then said that we will call it a day and i wanted my stud fee back she refused point blank as said no way end of story we had used his services and that was that.......I have had two bitches to this stud on being very experienced and always falls pregnant and the other may have been bad luck. I  have wasted a whole year now on the same stud and no pups and I am now without a stud fee to use another dog Any advice please. 

Has this dog ever sired a litter?  The situation could well be different is he hasn't.  I had a similar situation a few years back now where my bitch missed to a proven sire, another bitch missed around the same time to him - but as he was proven, we'd had his service and had to take the loss.  We didn't want to try him again, just in case it happened again.  She did have another litter the following season from another dog.  I didn't have another bitch to use with the original dog and the studs owners then moved very far away and didn't think it was worth traveling that far. 
I was offered a puppy from the stud using my stud fee and a top up but declined as I did find out some things about the breeder which made me not want a pup from them. 
We all know that breeding doesn't usually make you much money and I have now accepted the loss of this money and moved on....  Took me a while to accept it though.

Dogs not being machines can and do fail to produce litters with the presented bitch and there can be any number of reasons why, not all being the 'fault' of the dog.

The arrangement you have with the owner of the stud will depend on your individual agreement - in most cases you pay for the service but many stud owners will have other sorts of arrangements with the owner of the bitch, most usual payment once the litter is born (may include a fee for the head count) or some offer a free service if the bitch misses, but unless that is agreed before the service then it is pot luck.

If this dog has never produced a litter but has been used on several bitches then perhaps there is a problem otherwise it could well be one of those things, the problem may be with dog, bitch or the timing.

There is no way the stud owner can compensate you for the waste of breeding time but it would seem they have tried to accommodate you so unless you have a contract that has not been fulfilled then you better put it down to experience.

TBH what did you expect, you say you paid the fee which was over the odds and you left her there after seeing that he couldnt perform or performed inadequately. lesson learnt? I will never leave my bitch and never be happy without a tie i would stop overnight nearby to get the matings i was happy with.

something i read recently via a link on here 1 puppy as stud fee and 1 puppy to get the bitch pregnant this is the most difficult bit timings travelling etc.

There are so many variables that's the problem.

Did you have your bitch progesterone tested? Most experienced studs will ignore a girl prior to ovulation or after the eggs have ripened. I must say a badly taken photo is not good though and could have been for deception. I had this happen to me once, the stud owner's phone conveniently ran out of battery whilst the deed was done; I wasn't surprised she didn't take! Luckily we got lucky at the next season and I was there to watch.

The thing is the stud owner did try to accommodate you, it's not their fault you lived so far away. Couldn't you have booked in at a travel lodge or somewhere to try again the next day? Obviously he is a proven stud as you say you paid an over the top stud fee for him?
