Topic Dog Boards / Health / synulox problems

My eldest bitch (13) is on synulox for a suspected uti.     Liver and Kidney tests are normal, as is her temperature.

From an hour or so after giving the first dose, she has been staggering, shaking uncontrollably, has refused ALL food, she was vomiting about 2 hours after each dose before she stopped eating entirely.

Vet has given an anti-emetic injection, and loxicom for the pain, but it's been two days since that and she's only just taken a drink of liver juice voluntarily (well, if it's good for fading pups...)    I've been syringing her with glucose water to stop her getting dehydrated and keep her going.

She was so unresponsive last night we were talking about pts as we felt it was far more than a uti and at her age it's unfair to put her through too much.

A friend called to see me today and told me her Cocker was just the same when he had synulox for a skin complaint, they stopped the tablets and he recovered.    Luckily, when my friends dropped in, her ladyship decided to make an effort for her fans and actually got up and staggered to meet them!    An amazing change from the very poorly pooch of the last 4 days!   Bless her, she's always loved her public, a show girl through and through.

The tablets will be finished tomorrow morning so we'll stick with it, as she seems to be recovering, but I'm shocked at how badly the Synulox has affected her.

Can't find any information about these signs/side effects apart from the sickness, and possible diarrhoea.

Anyone else had/seen this ?

Never had any issues on the rare occasions we have used it.

Hope your girlie is now recovered.

Certainly the reaction needs reporting and to be noted.  Also to ensure that the same AB ingredient is not used again.

I would echo Brainless's comments hope your girl is feeling better now.

Thanks for the replies :-)

I've stopped all medications and she's just getting ginger balls (dried ginger mixed with cheese) for the sick feeling, luckily she's stopped bringing up bile.

Keeping her hydrated syringing with liver juice or my witches brew or the sugar/salt solution depending on the time of day, then water in between.  She has turned her nose up at all food, but shows interest.    Absolutely wont drink anything we've offered.

She's been more mobile today.
Is managing to walk out to the toilet and back, but can't come down steps.

As I write she's walking back and forth and giving me the 'feed me' look, but won't eat anything.

I now have fridge full of stuff she won't eat and we can't eat :-(

Progress of sorts, but I can't think of anything else to try feeding her.   I've never seen her so thin.

Yay - more progress!

She has eaten a few fistfuls of puppy kibble - she wants crunchy stuff! :-D

Still looks green and starts shaking about 6 hours after the ginger balls so that's how often we give one.

Is walking a bit better and managed the steps - up and down today all on her own  :-)  still wobbly, but not staggering about now, although she still walks as if she's spent too long on a roundabout.  Not showing any signs of pain anymore, her joints seem less tender.

So pleased to hear she is on the mend, they can be such a worry. Best wishes.

After rallying a little at the weekend, yesterday she went downhill.

She had 4 full-blown seizures by 6 pm then stayed in her bed without moving.

I stopped the syringing of liquids as it was stressing her out and she was refusing to swallow or drink for herself and was refusing all food again.

Today the vets confirmed she'd lost a kilo in a week.

We decided enough was enough and let her go.

We'll never know if it was the synulox/metacam, but it seems her body couldn't cope with them on top of whatever else was going on.
