Topic Dog Boards / General / Best brush for long double coated dog - Briard

Hi,

I haven't been on here for a few years but would like some recommendations from dog groomers please :-)

I am due to get my next Briard pup in 2 weeks, sadly I lost the love of my life (Murfee Briard) several months ago, I still have his Sister who is much adored.

I have spoken to my dog groomer and she has recommended a Bass pin brush to start with brushing his coat. She says that this will separate the top coat from the undercoat and be kind and gentle to his skin. I have checked dog groomers online and they are out of stock but thinking about it, there must be similar brushes out there and also, while I am asking, combs. Briards go through a horrendous coat blow for the first 2 years of their lives so I would appreciate a comb recommendation as well...please...I have never, in all of my years of owning Briards, managed to find the ultimate grooming tools.

I appreciate that these coats are difficult full stop! BUT....there must be grooming tools that make the job easier? Help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jo

Thanks for this, hi Kay! I hope that you and the dogs are well? ;-)

The one and only Briard I groomed occasionally I used a slicker and comb, but I know on my Yankee I was advised not to use the slicker regularly and to use a pin brush, so it may well be the same thing. A wide tooth comb is very useful too.

I never used an 'ordinary' slicker on mine but did use a Les Pooches, a pin brush, a Mason Pearson, a Rotating Comb and a V Rake and spritzed with a diluted solution of The Stuff to prevent static.

Thank you all for your help.

I dislike using slickers brushes on my dogs but have been known to even though it ended up ripping the coat. :-(

I use a Mason and Pearson and various other implements and also use a stripping comb for when they are at that horrible stage. I have now ordered a Bass pin brush for long, thick coats, a different shape to the one that is out of stock and will see how good this is.

For me, the only downside to owning a Briard is the coat.....
