If you take the puppy outside everytime she has a drink/something to eat/wakes up then that will be a good start. You need to really praise her when she does go to the toilet but not make a big deal about it if she doesn't or if she has an accident inside the house. She's looking for your praise and attention and will soon learn that you're delighted with her going to the loo!!

If you watch her when she's in the garden you will soon learn when she's about to go to the toilet - she'll start sniffing and going around in circles. If you see her doing that in the house then grab her quickly and take her outside.

I'm probably repeating things you already know but it really does work. My inlaws have a cocker and she is totally housetrained now, it only took a couple of weeks of intensive watching and putting outside after every meal/drink/sleep. Always take her out of the same back door and use the same route - if that makes sense!! That way she'll soon learn which door to whine and whinge at when she needs to go out.

Good luck and have fun with your pup.

hi this method at the moment works for my 11 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Oh the joys!! We find every now and again he has the odd accidents but very few.
Enjoy your pup

Hi

We have just got a Lab puppy who is now 9 1/2 weeks old.

We are very lucky on two counts. We have two older labs who have been teaching her to go out and also to do her wees and poos after she has eaten or when ever they go outside. We also have the added advantage of a dog flap into a secured garden and she has quite happily learnt to go in and out when ever she feels the need ! It was quite amazing as it only took her a couple of days to learn this and now she is 99% house trained ! I think though she is making up for it with her exuburatant energy and her chewing ! You can't have everything !!

I would love to have a dog door from our pantry, but our cats would get out and that's a no-no!

If someone can tell me how to install a doggie door that WON'T encourage declawed cats to go outside, I'd love to know!

This might sound daft - but is it possible to get a doggie door like the cat ones you can get with magnetic catches that are freed by a device the dog/cat wears on it's collar???

Do they make them like that? I'll have to look into that! Thanks!
