Hi i am new to this board but hoped someone may shed some light. I have a 3 year old bitch which i have been trying to mate i took her to a stud dog on her last 2 seasons and she missed, she hates travelling and the whole thing just upsets her. I kept a dog from a litter i had from a different bitch he is now 13 months old and doing okay on the show circuit so i have decided after long deliberation to use him on my bitch as there pedigrees tie up very well. My question is this although i have taken dogs to be mated i have never done the deed myself, the girl came in to season this morning and he has had a sniff but so far that is all, i really want to get it right this time so any advice would be very welcome.

Hi he will not be interested yet until she is ready, you will know when this is as her tail will move to the side, this is around day 10, the male will howl and act like a randy man.
good luck Debbie

LOL

Depending on the breed the bitch may not be ready, and dog may not be particularly interested until later. My bitches for example are often not reay until day 14 to 17!

U will notice that she will become more flirty with the male, she may even try mounting him and then she will keep putting her back end in his face. Mine started flirting around the 10 day but never allowed him to mount till 3 days later. Depends on the bitch.

When the time is right for the deed to be done it's a good idea to have some one else there with you to give you a helping hand if needed. Even if only to take the dog away for 5-10 minutes should he get over excited. Good luck.

When the female comes in heat she bleeds fo about 9-12 days, this is cleaning out her uterus, at between 8-10 days the discharge will become sparce and a tomatoe paste color, this means she is getting close. when she is almost done bleeding, she will start showing interest in the male. Check her vulva area when the male is smelling her, if she "winks" her vulva it means she is ready. This also works with horses. After they tie, don't leave them together. wait a day then breed her again. the sperm will stay alive for 48-72 hours, so all the eggs that are being dropped will get fertilized. Plus the more they tie the more chance for infection to the female.

Hi Day 13 now and he is desperate to mate her trying repeatdly last night and this morning, she is standing for him buth the problem is he just does not seem to be able to get the right spot so to speak i have tried putting him on something to make him a bit taller but to no avail any suggestions ?

Have u tried holding her and directing him in with ur hand? Try getting her back legs to part a bit this way when he mounts and puts his weight on her she will not be as high in the back end. I had this problem with Tiva she would arch her back and her vulva and he could never succeed, so when I had her back legs parted and his weight it weighed her down a little, I had my hand under her belly for support and he succeeded.
Good luck

Thanks yes i tried that last night, she tends to tuck her back end under and in the end decided to call it a day as they were both panting and i was hot and bothered but will have another go today ! Anyone who thinks breeding & showing dogs is easy should think again it is all bloddy hard work i will keep you posted !

I had this problem over Christmas, and by the time he worked it out she was no longer receptive.
I will have to try again next time, hoping he will hae more confidence and technique.
I was alone too, and would highly recomend a second handler for the bitch or dog, as he may need guidance.

Do you recomend getting some help tonight we are on day 13 now ?

If it was my breed tommorrow wouold be quite soon enough, as my girls have tended to be mated around days 14 to 17. If they are both fed up with it all tonight having a fesh start in the morning may be a good idea.
Also I would have someone that the bitch knows well, and have them handle her, keep her staedy etc, while you try to sort things with him, as he may be put off by another person.

Hi i have organised for a friend to come tomorrow, all the dogs know her really well she comes and stays when i go away and has handled him in the ring for me on many occasions, they have shown no interest today so hopefully by tomorrow it will be better. I feel like i have thought about nothing else for the past 2 weeks !!

Good luck, this is an infuriating situation. Ive found it easiest if you put your hand under the bitches belly and a finger on each side of the vuvlva, this way you can guide the vulva to the penis, and not the other way round which can upset an inexperienced dog. Have loads of patience and stay quiet.
I dont know how big youre breed is, but with little ones, if the dog starts to lose interest, lift her up and race round the room like an idiot, saying "You cant have her" (Great sport for the twitching curtain brigade if youre in the back garden) but it seems to perk up a slightly disinterested dog (a million thanks to Trish of the Trisheltone dachshunds for this tip as Sam would never have mated anything withoout it!!!)
Wow and I thought I was the only one who did that sort of thing. I've even done it in the garden before now I must have a very strange reputation round here. LOL I have often imagined that the men in white coats knocking on my door, having had a report of this strange woman running round the garden with a dog in her arms!!! But it does work.
Seriously though you have put into words exactly how I approach some matings, another tip by the way is to sit on the floor with your leg underneath the bitch, hand on her collar and other hand underneath as you have explained, this helps if you need to lift the bitch as well move her vulva for the dog to hit the spot.
